Only posting this for a friend not being a car owner himself. He has recently moved to Brighton and had found out that he has to wait over a year for a residents parking permit.

He doesn't want to sell his car as yet, but can do without it until the summer when he will need it again.

Where can he store it ?

He should try to rent a space or a garage privately. Not cheap but much cheaper and more convenient than having to buy vouchers or get up early to move it at the weekend!

:jester: Good job some of us are still loyal enough to the club that we travel down to every home game even though we've moved away.

Anyway - what would you understand about that... HOVE boy ?

There are places on the outskirts of town which are still free to park on the street. You could then catch a bus or walk or cycle to your car when needed.

Obviously this is a bit of a hassle if you need it daily but if you can get by without it for days at a time it's easy enough, though you havta make sure it's somewhere fairly safe

Tell him to park it in Hove, Whitehawk or Patcham depending on which end of town he is living.

Quite right. There's plenty of parking space in Coldean and no permit needed.

I think that what he does. But he has no need for the car for months and would have to check it daily. I think the chances of it getting towed away eventually are high ?

He was thinking more along the lines of anyone who knows someone with a farm or something who he could throw a few quid to just to leave it there for a while. Doesn't need to be very near Brighton, just wants to keep it safe.

It won't get towed away if it's a free-to-park place.

But why doesn't he just get rid of it and, if he needs a car, join the Brighton car club and use one of theirs? I don't know much about them but they put a leaflet through our door last summer. Much cheaper and much more peace of mind.

I was bemused about why he wants to keep it. But he does a lot of work in the summer where he needs the car. The reason I mentioned the towing is that around here, anything that somebody reports as not having moved for a while.. well you get the idea. I'll mention the Brighton Car Club though thanks...

Stick in a free parking space somewhere, and if he's that bothered, he can turn it around once a week. There's loads of space in the streets between Preston Park and Fiveways, about 15 minutes walk from town, or a 5 minute bus ride.

But in a free space, it won't be towed away, as long as it's legal.

I'm in the same boat - about 2-3 months off a resident's parking permit and parking on the outskirts of town during the week when I don't use the car much. It's one of those things that go with Brighton, I'm afraid.

Hiring garages etc. is possible (they're in Friday Ad) but expensive and, of course, can be miles away from where you live. NCP charge an eye-watering £200 a MONTH for a season ticket in Regency Square, a massive car park which is deserted apart from at weekends.

Tell him to get his full quota of "visitors parking permits" - if you're on the waiting list you're limited to buying, I think, 25 per year per person who lives in the property but they cost a quid each and you can park in resident's bays on the day you use them, one ticket per day.

I know of a farm in Fernhurst, border or Hampshire/Sussex/Surrey that rents out space for cars caravans etc.

It is about a 45 min drive from Brighton thorugh the country. Useful if you don't find anywhere else....I can let you know details if you want....

And of course your car will be welcomed with open arms by the car driving residents of these 'outskirts' as they circle the streets looking for alternative parking.
