I said buy a Dell, did I say anything about using Windows on it?

PC != Microsoft platform

however, Mac = Apple platform. The pain and suffering required to get anything else to run on a Mac (arrrrgh, BootX) just shows that

Apple laptops are over priced, under powered and terribly terribly built. Drop one of those shiny white ones and watch the plastic crumble, literally. Only the really expensive ones (the ones made in Ireland not China) are any good.

Same goes with Dell's, the ones made in Taiwan have a habit of dying, but the Irish or US built ones are indestructible

This is being posted off a Dell Latitude CPi A366ST, from 1999, running BeOS 5.1, from 2001 - it boots faster than any Mac or Windows powered box....

I've got an Apple laptop as well - its unusable. However, my Intel machine from the same year (1996) is actually able to run any Windows prior to XP, BeOS, Linux, etc fine. The Apple runs MacOS 8.1 (1998), and thats it.

NOT Dell.

Support is dire, components aren't top notch.

if you've got the money, IBM, no question.

I've always had the complete opposite experience - bits fall off Thinkpads, the PCMCIA controllers fail and the hard disks fail. The hard disks one is well documented, just search for "IBM DeathStar"

Also, never expect good software support off a hardware maker. IBM wrote most of the core of Windows 2000, hence they can give good software support too. For hardware support on Dell's, go to the website, go to your machines support page, and get the engineers manual (2-4MB PDF). You'll never need to phone tech support again except to order exact replacement parts for whats damaged*.

*note, you kinda need to be a hardware engineer for this...
