The Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten (Real name John Lydon) has not mellowed with age and still keeps up his punk rock rebellion and disgust with popular culture. He gave a recent interview to the Long Island Press where he aired his views on modern punk and had some not so kind words for Avril Lavigne and Kelly Osbourne.
The burning debate over what is and isn’t punk still rages to this day. Especially with corporate sponsored power-pop groups that wear designer “punk cloths” and parade themselves under the punk rock banner. This has certainly been a hot topic of debate here at antiMUSIC and it appears that the debate rages in other arenas as well, including the offices of the Long Island Press.

The interviewer asked Lydon, “What is your definition of ‘punk’?” Lydon responded, “Individual. Do-it-yourself. Independent. Free from corporate. (pause) I think that that definitely sums me up.”

The interviewer then asked, “Are there any bands now who...” Lydon obviously knew what was coming and responded, “Anyone who's parading under a hundred-thousand-dollar-plus video is not free from corporate. That's just the MTV advertising agency. I find them all to be just a bit of a sham. I mean I don't mind, I don't care, that's for some people who are into that. But don't be telling me what my life is. Because in the likes of Kelly Osbourne and this silly Lavigne thing, yapping on about what punk is or isn't—it's just unbearable. At their age, if they're calling me old, then I want to know why they haven't done nothing of their own. Nothing. It's all borrowed from my life. Therefore, they have no word of any value in it.”

“You'll find that empty vessels make the most sound,” Lydon said following a half asked follow up question. ”And the ones that proclaim themselves the most punk are the least.”

Rotten is, and always has been a professional gobshite and total bore. Who gives a damn about this clapped out has been who ought to crawl back under his (supposedly non corporate) rock in LA.

This is one 'musician' I would happily smack in the mouth. Only problem with Lydon is that if you were to beat the shit out of him you'd create a major pollution hazard.

punk:
This new fad of punk will soon die out just like techno did and just like nu-metal will soon enough. Underground punk is where the true talent lies and yes Offspring & Green day - although "famous" still play the sort of punk they want to and how they started.

I don't much care for AV and can't stand stand any of the Osbourne clan, musically or personally. It's just that everytime rentaquote nobody John Lydon says something it's always rude and negative.

Shite on Lydon I say.

You young lads out there are probably right but when I was 15 in 1977, he was a standard bearer for a movement that was great in the short time that it lasted. Going to see punk bands in those couple of years was an experience that sadly will never be repeated and certainly bears no relevance to the music scene today which in this old farts opinion is absolute bollocks!

There's no doubt Lydon is a mouthpiece and a nasty little man and his rants owe a lot to the fact nobody gives a f*** what he says and are mostly done for effect and retaliation.

Comparisons with Dwayne spring to mind.

But some of the Pistols tracks and his stuff with PIL were class.
Stand them next to todays dross and they are minor masterpieces. Twenty plus years on they still sell well. Today's muck will be forgotten within a year.

JEM, you hit it on the head.

Who cares what he does or doesn't say? You guys slagging off JR are giving him way too much credit. The simple question is, do you enjuy listening to his music? If you do, then great. If you don't, it's easy - go and listen to someone else.

And who cares about the Pistols going on EMI - they made no secret of their hypocrisy (rock n roll swindle, filthy lucre spring to mind) and now they just milk it for all it's worth. If you fall for it, more fool you.

I'm off to see the Pistols on Monday - I'll give Johnny your regards, NHM.

The corner quietly rusting
I have to say that I think some of JR's solo stuff is excellent.

My son on hearing it said whose this its pretty good for you. PIL I said, PIL he said is that Johnny Lydon. Yes I said, get that racist prick off he said. And this from someone who thinks M&M is talented and has no problems inflicting his borrowed mucked up rubbish on me.

(The point I am trying to make here is my son will always defend MM to the hilt cos he thinks its all an act. Yet he can't see that JL is just an act, who needs to be controversial to be noticed. He learnt this, just like a naughty child does to get attention when being good does not work, from his controversial past. One swear word on a programme few people watched and he was a star. Can anyone blame him, just like can anyone blame the naughty child, if he has been taught these ways.)

He is not the most talented person to ever walk the earth. He has made some decent stuff most of it was ahead of its time and some of his solo stuff would be right, about now. Could be why my son thought it was good until the blinkers came on.

But then what you gonna do when the river runs dry, don't ask me cos I don't know.

Comparing shit to other shit doesn't make shit any less shitty.

Yes, four out of five doctors agree, that Lydon compared to Kelly Osbourne is still shit.

His solo album sank without a trace, proving him as a no-talent ponce.

I once complimented him on his choice of musicians for PIL (i.e. John Mcgeogh, Lu Edmonds, Jah Wobble etc) and all he could respond was "well what about me? ".
What a PRATT !
