EU fraud doubles in a year

A damning report today reveals fraud in the European Union budget has doubled in one year to £700 million.
This may only be the tip of a vast iceberg, it warned, because EU accounting is still so lax that no one can be sure how big the problem really is.
The findings, by Britain's most respected financial watchdog, the National Audit Office, are hugely embarrassing to Neil Kinnock, the former Labour leader, who is now the £165,000-a-year European commissioner in charge of eradicating corruption.
