Travelling DJ is off to the Oscars
by AIDAN RADNEDGE
A DJ from Sussex will be at Hollywood’s most exclusive A-list Oscars party this year.
Places at the annual Vanity Fair soirée at Morton’s restaurant, Los Angeles, are reserved for the movie industry’s elite stars and insiders.
But Durrington DJ Steve McMahon will be among them next month, playing records aimed to get the likes of Jude Law, Renée Zellweger and Johnny Depp on the dancefloor.
Oscar fever broke out in earnest this week when the nominations for the February 29 ceremony were announced, with the final Lord Of The Rings movie the early favourite.
Once the speeches are over, the ceremony has finished and the commiserations have been offered, the stars traditionally move on to Morton’s to dine and dance.
This will be the second year Steve has been DJ for the event, having impressed Vanity Fair publisher Condé Nast when he lived in New York in the Nineties.
Hove-based DJ Norman Cook, alias Fatboy Slim, was the guest DJ in 2002.
Last year Steve played jazz and swing records until 2am, when late revellers included Ryan O’Neal, Colin Farrell and Peter O’Toole.
Steve said: “Ryan O’Neal really stood out on the dancefloor – he was shuffling away from the minute he got there. “The atmosphere was a little subdued because the Iraq war had just broken out. But the actors were enjoying themselves. They didn’t have to put on a public face, just have a few drinks and relax.”
One group included O’Neal, Michael Caine, George Hamilton, novelist Jackie Collins and actress Farrah Fawcett. Another comprised Tim Robbins, Richard Gere, last year’s Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, Adrien Brody and Chris Cooper, plus Best Actress Nicole Kidman.
Steve began DJ-ing in Brighton 20 years ago at the Royal Escape before moving to New York in 1987.
