Is this a fundraiser for your supporters organization? What type of participation do you get? It sounds like there is some "sponsor" recognition, and a banquet at the end of the season? What is a "£"? To me money only has a "$" in front of it. Like I said, I apologize for the ignorance in advance.

The money goes to the club, and in return we get the website next to the player in the matchday programme, and a few spots at the sponsors dinner held towards the end of the season. On top of that a signed shirt.

I assume the £ joke is a question, but the current exchange rate from dollars to pounds is 0.69. So in other words, $1 will buy you £0.69p.
