NSC Film Club: Sideways

The critics have been raving about this film - and I went to see it last week. But I have to say I was a bit disappointed.

Just seemed a very average buddy movie to me. Liked the filming of the "getting drunk in a restaurant" scene, which seemed particularly realistic *blush* but apart from that nothing's really stuck in my mind.

Enjoyable enough, but hardly five-star.

Anyone else seen it? Views?

I enjoyed it but don't know why it's being lauded as shoe-in for The Oscars. America always seems to lavish over-the-top praise on reasonably low-budget, well-scripted and acted, unusual films, which I find a tad patronising. Rather like us beating Sunderland.

A la Ken Loach, whose films are all of the above but too political; there are splendid 'indy' films out there - I HIGHLY recommend The Station Agent. You will not be disappointed. I promise.

Last time I went to the pictures was "Die Another Day" - not one of my favourite things the cinema

So is Sideways worth seeing then?

I too am on a mission to see more films this year and get half price cinema tickets every Wednesday. Sideways is possibly the only thing I'm interested in seeing out at the moment.

Wife and I went to see Sideways a couple of weeks ago. It was billed as a comedy road movie with wine. Well, it had the wine and the road but not much comedy. I couldn't believe it when it was nominated for several Oscar's - it must be a poor year if that's the case.

I saw it on the plane flying over to China. Must admit i thought it was going to be more of a slapstick comedy, but was highly pleased when it didn't turn out to be.

I would recommend it if you like films ala Station Agent, Good Girl, Lost in Translation etc. Well scripted, some excellent acting and there is a very good dark humour twisting throughout the storyline, which is basically two middle aged men going on a week's wine tasting stag trip and finding the company of two ladies. The focus is mainly on the bridegrooms fears, debauchery at first, but more and more leans towards the divorcee who is having a kinda mid-life crisis because he can't get over his ex.

Thoroughly absorbing and its actually refreshing to see films like this nominated for oscars. Well worth the watch.

Enjoyed Sideways and the Station Agent

Possibly the Station Agent more

Sideways is a great "off the wall" type film, for a refreshing change - but Oscar material

Isn't this done by the same bloke who did About Schmidt? There was a highly rare outbreak of filmic agreement on film at Harveys Heights after watching that crap, which we promptly dubbed "About Shit". Nothing, absolutely nothing seemed to happen; just Jack Nicholson tottering about like just about every elderly American bloke. Dull as f***.

Not that I recall, but a full-frontal scene [Sadly, Male] after our hero sneaks into a bedroom to retrieve his mates wallet
