Could somebody explain to an old man what R 'n' B stands for these days? In the old days it used to be Rhythm 'n' Blues but obviously not any more.

Have to say that I like pretty much any type of music, except maybe country & western and heavy metal, my vote goes to jazz, there are so many different genres, from traditional to modern, acid to funky, pretty much satisfies any mood.

I was going to ask the same thing as I liked Rhythm 'n' Blues

depends if its a good song or not, i wont hate a group/band/artist because they are classed as pop or rap or something, if a song is good, its good! i like any music really.

Sorry to sit on the fence!:lolol:

Look at all you indie kids stuck in the mid 90s :p

Club/Dance for me... there's no Motown or Soul on there, and it looks really crap to put "other".

Real "rhythm and blues" like Booker T and the MGs and the like from the 60s/early 70s is quality. Modern day "RnB" is arse, and all sounds the same... and it makes me maaaad!! :censored:

To be fair "there's nothing like" Omar (sorry), and from what I've heard he's nay bad, D'angelo nay bad, not heard any of the other two, my modern music knowledge extends only to house and electro really... I'm a bit of a retro person at heart.

Its the pop shite that really pisses me off with modern day RnB (which I've heard means Rhythm and Bass, allegedly), and as with any genre it is good to start off with, and then turns pop, just like punk did with the likes of the Police and the Jam in the mainstream, and the indie did by about '97, grunge did when Bush hit England properly and it all sounded old, etc etc...

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not one of those who listens to music purely because its meant to be "underground", I just get fed up with the same old shite all the time, hence I stick to my 60s/70s stuff which was purely original. There isn't (and hasn't been) another Simon and Garfunkel, a Queen, or even a Rolling Stones (discounting the efforts of Primal Scream) at all... not even close!

If Jill Scott and Bilal are purely original then they'll probably get my vote! Its the just the rest of the scene that is dragging now, I reckon. Personal opinion of course ;)

Edit: Rae and Christian aren't that bad though... Northern Soul and modern RnB, works well.

As far as I can make out it's what we old 'uns used to call 'Soul' when we were young 'uns !

Like Albion Girl, I can listen to anything once and I am prepared to listen to anything from Classical, Glam Rock, 'Soul', jazz funk, Sinatra (et al) sixties pop all the way through to dance music.

punk: :unclesam:

Spot on.

I am like albiongirl though and have a wide range of taste in music.

I like rock, some punk, classical, blues and even some dance music.
