Notts County on the brink of extinction

Press release from Notts County Supporters Trust:

Notts County is heading towards extinction in five days. There is a
very real chance that the match at Meadow Lane against Luton Town
this Saturday could be the last ever game for the world's oldest
League club.

We have all seen the news about how financial backers of the group
put together by former Chairman Derek Pavis have withdrawn their
support, leaving the future of the world's oldest League club in
serious doubt.

The administrators Kroll must now present a case for the future of
the club at the Football League meeting on Monday, September 8th.
Failure to do so may signal the end of Notts County's 115-year
membership of the League and the end of a vital piece of football
history.

As this deadline approaches, representatives of the independent
Supporters' Trust continue to work `behind the scenes' to
help
engineer a solution. Today, members of the Trust have discussed with
the administrators Kroll how the future of our football club can be
secured, which is where YOU can help.

We are appealing to supporters everywhere to help secure the future
of Notts County Football Club. We need everyone to give what they
can. However small or large a donation - whether it is a #1,
#100 or
#1000 or more, together we can make a difference.

The Trust believes that with the goodwill of supporters everywhere
we can raise between #250,000-500,000 by Monday - the deadline set
by the Football League.

The Trust is not going to let the world's oldest league club go
out
of business without a fight. The idea that Saturday's match
against
Luton Town being the last is unthinkable. That would be a tragedy
-
not only for the people of Nottinghamshire but for our national
game.

With all YOUR support we can be a part of saving the World's
Oldest
League Club. For details on how to send donations see the Notts
County Supporters Trust website: www.nottscotrust.org.uk

Fran - a question.

Given your avatar can we take it that you are a lying, cheating, diving gypo with little brains and a knob to match?

None of those and I don't have a knob. BTW, I like the hairstyle on your avatar but I prefer Robbie's (and I don't mean Williams!) ;)

Lets hope they go out of business, how DARE they take our place in the Premiership. How different it would have been if Tommy Johnson had not scored after the ball went out of play, the Archer fiasco may never have happened.

Good point Gunter. And also they had that really annoying yellow stripe on their otherwise cool Black & white kit

After putting my hand in my pocket to help at least Bournemouth, Bury and York very sadly and very selfishly I think I'm getting 'compassion faigue'. It has been said before we keep on hearing these "Saturday will be the last game for xxxxx unless we get £xxxxx by Friday" - and it never is. Something always turns up.

This is hard to say but I think it would be good if one or more of these clubs DOESN'T come back from the brink. All the while last-minute rescue deals are thrashed out other clubs can continue to run themselves badly and players/agents can continue to make high wage demands safe in the knowledge that "it'll all be alright in the end". Also I'd rather County went bust than Oldham as we'd lose 3 points.

I hate myself for saying that, if I was Mark Lawrenson or a Premiership fan I could afford to shrug smugly and say "Well it's business, if they hadn't been run so appallingly they wouldn't be in that mess", but as a Brighton fan it does sound a bit obscene. The only crumb of comfort I can offer County fans is that going bust is not the end of the world - Look at Accrington and Aldershot.

Totally agree old friend. It seems to be one charity after another, and I do feel bad for clubs in dire straits. I doubt if I'll ever get to sit in my seat at Bury, but I gave willingly, Every Albion cause gets a donation from me, and I think from now on, charity must begin at home.
I'm sure there are not to many Rockerfellas on this board.

I don't mean to sound self righteous, but I suspect I'm going to. How many of these clubs survive, in part, because of the charity of other fans though? At least short term, anyway, it may be what makes the difference, what gives them long enough to sort themselves out.

In any case, we were brought to our knees by mendacity, not incompetence (although our lot were incompetent crooks, I'll admit that - they didn't even realise how valuable the Goldstone land was). If that were to happen again, would we all turn our noses up? If one goes, there will be a domino effect, others will follow - I can't see how it will be a good thing.

A Notts County fan accused Brighton fans of 'arrogance' in WSC. We seem to be doing our bit with the comments above to make it look like he's right. I shall send a few quid, because I remember how bloody gut wrenchingly shit it felt to think I was going to lose my team.

Exactly! There are club chairmen up and down the country saying "It doesn't matter how badly we run the club, we can step aside when it gets too bad and the supporters will rally round and play on the heartstrings of fans of other clubs and scrape up enough for a resuce package. Have another bottle of champers."

I DO care about Notts County and I'm certainly not 'Arrogant' - but if the company goes bust then it goes bust. As I said before it isn't the end of the world, if the fans care then 'Notts County' will survive, even if the present organisational structure that bears the name does not.

I should add that I'm partly speaking from experience as I'm a shareholder of Bradford (Park Avenue) and a member of the Supporters' Club. They left the League in 1970, went bust in 1974 and actually stayed dormant until 1988 (although a Sunday League team kept the name going). The club is run by fans of the 'old' team as is Accrington Stanley.
