Just had this passed onto me......
ANOTHER LONDON ROAD was formed in response to plans to build a 100,000 sq feet Tesco store with parking for up to 1000 vehicles at the Northern end of Brighton's London Road. This proposal also involves new tall buildings and the demolition of everything in the area bounded by London Rd, York Hill, New England St and New England Hill, including New England House.

Hundreds of jobs, the small businesses, specialist shops, and homes will be lost. The area already has serious pollution problems, but the plan's air quality model remains untested.

But this proposal is not a done deal and planning permission has not yet been granted.

If they are planning to build a supermarket over small specialist shops, then surely this will create more jobs, as the new supermarket will employ hundreds of jobs???

I don't know Brighton too well, but is there a supermarket near by already?

There is. Sainsbury's opened last year. There is also going to be an Aldi where Sainsbury's used to be.

London Road is a shithole and does need some kind of re-generation, maybe even re-development - but a f*** off great big Tesco? Nein danke.

f*** the petiton. If they're going to demolish New England House they can build what they like, it can't be any worse. No doubt this will drag on and on and on and on for decades (like Jubilee Street and the Brighton Locomotive Works sites to name but two) whilst people find fault with every single plan put forward.

The law has GOT to be changed to presume in favor of development. Black Rock, King Alfred, West Pier, Falmer Stadium, the Marina; every single thing brings out the NIMBYS, NOTES, BANANAS, and Regency Society TOSSERS to hold back urban evolution and keep the city a decaying slum.

I know some of you will disagree - but f*** you, you're wrong.

I have not heard about this proposal. I think I'd like to know more about it before I decide whether or not to add my name to a petition to stop it.

Concur. Though one would hope we don't just allow supermarkets to be thrown up for the sake of it.

I have looked on the "Another London Road" website, the Facebook group and examined the petition and I cannot find any details of this supposed development.

Yet on the website they urge people to contact the Argus, write to their MP, contact their councillor and tell their friends. They are asking people to help out with fundraising and campaigning.

How can anyone make an informed judgement on the merits of the scheme until the details are known? The people responsible seem to have some sort of axe to grind with Tesco's.

Agree 100% with you. That area is in desperate need of re-development and anyone who thinks that can be done without a big supermarket is living in cloud cuckoo land.

This is getting rediculous.

I lived on New England Road (known as New England Hill by people who clearly don't know BN1) my entire life, before leaving home.

I went to St. Barts junior school, and they were very worried about the impact of the new Sainsbury's and New England Quarter development... my dad is a retired teacher and is on the committee there.. well this is taking things to a whole new level.

Traffic has increased over 500% in the area immediately surrounding Ann Street and Cheapside. Right next to the primary school.

My parents are very friendly with the councillor, and this is a very serious issue for the local residents, I know they won't just lay down and accept it like the other ponces in their overpriced flats. I can't see it happening without a fight.

But just what is it they won't accept? I haven't seen any detailed proposals. There seems to be next to no information about this available. They mention Tesco's and "tall buildings" knowing that will get people worrying, but fail to provide specific details.

For all I know the scheme might include a doctor's surgery, a community centre and affordable housing. I fail to see how anyone can make a judgement without more information.

If the proposition is 'as stated' then fitting in ANY 100,000sq ft development *anywhere* from where the London Road meets the A23 proper is going to mean demolishing existing buildings, and being that the last phase of redevelopment has only just been completed, I fail to see how this is necessary and/or worthwhile for the residents (the ones who are directly effected).

But that's just my point. You don't know the details and nor do I. Probably because they haven't been finalised. The first post mentioned that planning permission hasn't been granted. I don't think PP has even been sought let alone granted. The fact that this "Another London Road" group is asking for people to oppose this scheme without the details being known is in my opinion wrong.

According to JC Denton Sr, if those who are going to be effected aren't asking the questions at every step it's very easy to push things through on the grounds of "public interest". If a petition is signed against any change whatsoever to the status quo, it's more likely to be rejected on principle.

I actually agree, which isn't contradicting what I said before. Ideally it won't be a Tescos as, as has been pointed out, the area has quite a few supermarkets already. However they've really got to make it easier to rectify planning mistakes. Build something, and if it's wrong or doesn't work then knock it down and build something else. Currently that can't be done as it just takes SO f***ing long to plan anything as everybody has an idea of what the ideal development should be and they all protest if it doesn't match their wishes.
