Not sure when he stopped playing, but I must have caught the twilight of his career, as I remember the name from my childhood, but not a great deal about the player he was.

saw him play many times and also played cricket against him and Bobby Smith when their team, Newton Heath from Manchester, toured Sussex one year. Great bloke!
