i was in berlin the other week and had an apartment in the nice and leafy prenzlauerberg district.

i noticed however that at a jewsih school on the main street they had to have 24 hour police protection.

always thought berlin to be a very tolerant city but they must have much bigger issues than us!

Nothing to do with the fact that there is a large Turkish Islamic minority in Berlin of course?

Yes, sadly, this is a factor. There's also the minority of people still attracted to the Nazi ideology and there's also the Russian influence on East Germany - there was a casual degree of anti-semitism in the eastern bloc countries. The three strands lead to an unholy cocktail.

A friend of mine was shocked to be called a "dirty Jew" in the streets of Berlin a couple of years ago and she's not even Jewish but that didn't seem to matter. I bet that some Jews are having a dodgy time in some areas of the city. I've certainly seen the security at the central synagogue bumped up over the years.

Pretty much all prominent jewish buildings have a lot of security and protection in Berlin. There's a jewish cafe in a side street in Mitte which has anti-ramming bollards and door men.

P.S. I used to live in Prenz. Where did you stay?

I always find it amusing when the right wing has a march its called by some "Fascists on the streets" when the (fascist) left wing do, its "A protest march", both sides have extremes each as bad as the other, who would rather use physical force than the ballot box, just as the IRA and many other fanatics.

But lets be honest...most left wing marches are response marches particularly when fascists are on the move.

Well, the people who shouted at abuse at my friend were white skinheads. I've course they're a minority but the fact that they don't have Bundestag seats doesn't mean they don't exist. The BNP don't have any parliamentary seats but are you saying there are no racists in the UK.

The problems with antisemitism in Germany are caused by a mix of Islamic extremists and neo nazis - ideal bedfellows, of course, and there is evidence of co-operation going back a long way. A strange result of this is the 'Antideutsch' - groups who proclaim themselves to be 'anti fascists 'but because of German history give unconditional support to the sate of Israel and spend most of their time attacking other groups on the left. Germany is a very interesting place.......but politically weird, for obvious historical reasons.

According to Hope not Hate website the BNP are launching their Brighton branch at The Branch Tavern tonight in London Rd. It's like the bloody 80's all over again, Fascists marching on the streets, BNP popping up everywhere (though thankfuly falling ob their arses), mass unemployment, negative equity, collapsing businesses, soaring prices, and worst of all a bloody conservative govmt. It's like Thatcher never went away.

Maybe I didn't make it clear on my original post. I concur that Labours policies have a hand in the current situation, it was more a comment on the position we are presently in, not an apportioning of blame.

The common tactic of these so called "anti-fascists" is to put pressure on the landlord of the premises using all manner of threats and abuse and then as they did here, mobilise a thirty strong mob to as I said if necessary physically prevent the meeting take place.

"Tonight in Brighton, 30 people turned up outside the Branch Tavern Pub in London Road to protest, forcing the BNP to scuttle off elsewhere". Quote.

Apparently the fascists moved off elsewhere although where the BNP supporters went is not clear.

the "Branch" used to such a cracking pub too great pint of mild served there but the last time I went in there buddwiser stickers everywhere and the place was empty and now seems to have gone further downhill.
