Looks very bad news

Was on my way back to Tadley, police blocked off the A4 at Theale to allow the fire crews and ambulances a free run on the A4.

Looks like someone tried to beat the lights on an unmanned crossing. Terrible.

Sounds like it was a CAR crash.

But the railways, as usual, will be the ones to get the blame and all the scrutiny.

Well it is Railtracks fault that a car could get on the tracks...

Anyway, thats irrelevant. People are dead either way. RIP to those involved.

You just hope this car being there wasn't deliberate.

Train sabotage by vandals is the great unspoken nightmare of the government.

Frequently journalists will be asked to not report small-scale attacks on trains for fear of copycat actions by other morons.

Hrm, true.

Trains here go so damn slowly with Xenon headlights that almost burn through fog that the driver has stopping distance vision almost all the time. Hasn't been a fatality of a passanger on a train for nearly twenty years as a result.

Nonsense. In isolated rural locations, half-barrier level crossings are much safer than full-barrier crossings. I have lived next to a half-barrier crossing for almost 30 years. There have been very few incidents - and every single one of them has been the fault of a motorist ignoring the lights. It is unbelievable what some people will do as a result of impatience.

But I wouldn't want an unsupervised whole-barrier crossing in an isolated rural area. At least with half-barrier crossings, stupid motorists can usually clear themselves out of the way before being hit by a speeding train. Full-barrier crossings guarantee a collision when motorists mis-time their "jump the lights" manoeuvres.

An understandable comment.

Hearing about it certainly shut up the people moaning about having to get a coach from Guilford to Reading on the way home this evening.

RIP:(

But it would be completely unacceptable for the railway in the UK to operate at a 30mph speed limit.

Imagine restricting motorists to speeds that guaranteed safe stopping in the event of another vehicle suddenly getting in the way.

And don't forget ...

More people have been killed or seriously injured in car crashes in the UK this evening than have died or been seriously injured in this train crash.

FFS get a life big time.

That is an amazingly crap statement to say the least.

Go and learn about the Railways before you post something like that.

As usual Lord B is spot on. As a railway man myself I really get annoyed when the railways are blamed for accidents caused by motorists. Railways are very safe in comparison with the roads, Drivers are higly trained and all rail movements a strictly controlled. Get hold of a copy of a drivers assessment package or Rule Book and compare that with the knowledge required to drive a car. Sadly once again a train driver is dead because of the stupidity of a motorist.

Unfortunately a rail crash tends to be more spectacular and newsworthy than the daily carnage on the roads. I suspect that it's easier for the popular press to campaign for improved rail standards whilst ignoring the appaling driving standards on the roads, they wouldn't want to upset their readership would they? It's all about selling papers, they don't give a toss about safety and don't understand it.

Whatever happened is not clear so it's difficult to comment without knowing all the facts, but there are suggestions that the car was parked on the crossing, possibly as a suicide attempt.

Motorists regularly ignore flashing red lights at open crossings and weave round half barriers, they have no idea how difficult it is to stop a train travelling at speed. Steel wheels on steel rails, particularly in wet railhead conditions at high speed, can take over a mile to stop.

The recent lenient sentence handed out to the woman that killed Ddriver Kevin Crouch on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway just sums up the crap attitude of courts towards motorists that kill. she was only charged with careless driving for Christs sake. When incompetence/recklessness leads to someone dying the penalties must be muck more severe.

Condolences to the family of the train driver and all the families who have lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy. RIP.
