Ok guys....i need some help and pointers in the right direction.

I'm in the early stages of planning a 4 day break in New York for next christmas for my 8 year old daughter, my wife and myself.

We would go out there the week before crimbo and arrive home possibly on christmas eve.

The break would be purely for sight-seeing and just taking in the christmas atmosphere for my daughter.

But i know nothing about the city or where to stay. I don't know how much it would cost or who to book with.

If anyone has any experiences or knows anything about what i want, i'd be much indebted to you.

Many thanks

Stay there, both Virgo's Haircut and I have been there and I certainly can't recommend it highly enough. Convenient location, friendly staff, comfortable accomodation without breaking the bank.

As for stuff to see, the list is endless:

- Empire State Building
- Times Square
- Grand Central Terminal
- Liberty Island/Ellis Island
- Ground Zero
- American Museum Of Natural History (if you're into that kind of thing)

I'd be happy to help and provide as much info as I can. I've been to NY myself on two occasions, and love it. Can't wait to go back next year. Flights wise, I would recommend Continental Airlines from Gatwick to Newark Airport. From Newark, it's about a 30 minute train trip to New York's Penn Station, which is just a couple of minute walk from the hotel I recommended.

PM me if there's anything else I might be able to help with.

Nuffing wrong with Newfoundland and Labrador, very nice province with some lovely people, just a little wild and remote into the bargain (the place not the people). Went to New York for Christmas in 95, ironically as a break from living in Newfoundland and Labrador, bit of a contrast and a culture shock.

Lots of decent places to visit, try Coney Island and Brighton Beach for the surreal experience of being surrounded by people speaking in Russian and all the street signs in Cyrillic script. Empire State Building at sunset is purely magical, one of those must do experiences, the views over Manhattan are stunning and it makes you realise how big the place is. Met museum is pretty good, ate in a strange little restaurant off Times Square, think it is Eastern European, all the tables were in little booths...hard to convey what it was really like but I remember the food being cheap, basic and tasty.

Whatever you end up doing, enjoy yourselves.

I went to New York last weekend and it was amazing. Was really nice and christmassy really wish I had more than just four days there.

I stayed in Chelsea in Manhattan which was a really good location easy access to everything.

When I went I flew to Newark and got a shuttle direct to my hostel which was $15 per person.

I got a metro card to travel around think it was $24 and valid for 7 days, and this got me everywhere i needed to go.

For seeing the tourist attractions you can buy the New York pass which is $50 and there's loads of stuff you can do but i think you have to do it all in one day. So I didn't bother to buy that.

When we went to see a broadway show there's a place you can stand in line to get discount off a show. I got 50% off.

Wasn't really as expensive as I thought it would be, and my favourite place in New York was called Bryant Park (which is a few blocks from times square) and it was free to go there and they had free ice skating, just had to pay $10 for skates.

You'll have a fantastic time when you go

My wife and I went there 2 years ago and had a great time - we took our son, then 11 and he had a great time too.

For not a lot more money we combined NYC with Boston (Did 3 nights Boston and 4 nights NYC) Boston was great - 2 ft of snow! Skating on Boston Common was cool. (Virgin do a good deal)

I believe that there's a very long NYC thread on this board somewhere - however if you can try and take in some form of sporting event! We went to the Giants v Dallas Cowboys American Football - superb experience - however it's not cheap! (At least the tickets I bought wern't!)

Do the Statten Island ferry - it's free! and you get a superb view of the Statuue of Liberty.

Empire State is also worth doing.

One final tip. Get a 'Greeter', these are native New Yorkers who give up about half a day to take you round their City - you choose where to go, or you can leave it up to them - they don't charge - even paying for their own meal - you only pay for any transport that you might use. We had a really great guy - so proud of his City, and he took us to places that we would not have otherwise see,

I think their website is Big Apple Greeters or something loke that. Organisie it early - they don't have that many Greeters and are always busy over the Holidays.

Have fun!

I've got my monitor tilted a bit, so it's pointing in the right direction for me.

That's why I said "ish". ;)

Don't buy ANYTHING within about three blocks of Times Square.

Speaking as someone who got seriously ripped off for a camera battery

:dunce: :lolol:

The Metro Cards for the subway are good value.

Your daughter will love FAO Schwartz (toy store as seen in the film Big, with Tom Hanks- it's the one where he dances on the giant piano keys). You probably will too :lolol:

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, costs nothing and gives you a beautiful view of Manhattan, as well as being architecturally stunning itself.

And get tickets for a Broadway show, I'm sure the kid won't mind the Lion King or similar.

I have been 3 times in the last three years so if you've got any questions please ask away. The obvious things like the Empire State dont need to be mentioned as they are must see's but bear in mind the queues around xmas time. They do heave.

Best thing to do is go on a cruise around the WHOLE island with a tour guide, doesnt cost much, but u get some awesome pictures and the tour guide knows pretty much everything about the area itself.

Enjoy yourself, and if it snows go to central park, really really beautiful !!!! :clap2:
