Really pissed that I couldnt get to Charlton yesterday. I remember a New Years Day visit I think 25 years ago. Im sure Danny Wilson scored in the first minute and we hung on for dear life for the rest of the game. I was there that day. Do I remember correctly and was that our last visit to the Valley?

I was there, that was my first away game...at least I started off with a win!

From memory, on that day, there were no more than 200 Albion fans...the ground was huge and largely empty.

Pedant alert - Gary O'Reilly scored the winner that day. Also it was a long time ago but my recollection is that we had a fair following there that day. There were certainly enough to justify a charter train.

I recall sitting (I think) in that stand behind the goal and we substatially outnumbered the Charlton fans. Felt like we had a few thousand.
I would guess at about 2K? Not a big stand and wasn't full... good day-out - personal highlight was the singing of GOSBTS at the correct pace and started off in choirmasterly fashion by Titanic...

In those days some London matches would kick off at 12.00 on NY day. It was affordable to do 2 games so, wanting to see a 'top' game I went up to watch Arsenal v Spurs, pay on the day. Spurs won 2-1 in the days of Archibald & Crooks but I was not impressed with the game or crowd at all. as it missed the edge of having 'your' team playing.

Straight out of the ground and down to Chalton in time to see us score (I thought it was 4 mins) I was in the Charlton end. Good day out.

Even bigger Pedant alert. I will stake a childs life that Eric Young got the winner on that New Years Day game.
I mentioned in the match day thread; also the fact that Tony Towner came on a sub for the Addicks & got a great reception form us.

p.s. I don't have kids, so any child will do.

Did we ever play Charlton at Upton Park ?

Yes , can't remember the result but i do remember almost being crushed behind a stand barrier in a crowd surge as the faithful were somewhat boisterous that day.

I think the game was before the Valley was shut for several years, rather than after. Think it was shut from about 1986 to 1997ish.

The old east terrace was MASSIVE. The floodlight pylons were about a third of the way up. If they been at the top they'd have been useless as too far from the pitch.
