what actually caused the hillsborough disaster?

It depends who you talk to. You'll get different answers from the fans, police, FA and stewards.

Basically a load of fans arrived late to the Leppings Lane end of Hillsborough. Fans were standing and there were fences at the front of the stand to prevent pitch invasions.

A roar went up because the game had already started and fans started running towards the entrance. Because there were still so many fans outside the police made the decision to open a gate and allowed these fans to rush in pushing the fans who were already in there.

98 fans were crushed to death by fans pushing against them.

My own personal view is that both the stewards and police were to blame.

Leppings Lane is Sheffield is so easy an area to control and there was no need for any of those dreadful scenes to happen.

I don't think seating is the answer

Stand. I'm sick of having Hillsborough mentioned every time someone says 'bring back terracing'. No one says we should abandon the railways because of Potter's Bar, Hatfield etc.

Also the DVT argument is a good one, we must try and use it. Cramped seats don't help the circulation.

For safety's sake let us stand!

I agree completely Brovian.

It seems strange to realise that youngsters like super nova don't know what happened 14 years ago.

It is a case of knee jerk reaction again. Standing had been in place for decades before that without a disaster.

The only time I ever felt scared when standing was at Stamford Bridge and somehow my feet lost contact with the terraces when the Leeds fans (ex husband was Leeds supporter) surged forward expecting a goal. I couldn't move or get contact with the ground again.

I shouted to a steward and my husband to pull me out and we moved along to the next section.

I like standing and if it is done properly will bring back the proper atmospheres to game

Actually Yorkie there were a few other disasters - Ibrox and Bolton spring to mind. However that doesn't mean that standing is 'unsafe' per se, properly controlled and stewarded it's just as safe as sitting.

Agree with you about younger fans not knowing who was playing. That's very sad.

Normally when we have this debate on NSC the vast majority are in favour of standing but we always get a couple of old women from the 'Nanny Squad' who come on and tell us not to be so stupid. Have they all seen the light?
