New Election Boundary for East Brighton to Seaford proposed

Following on from the Norman Baker thread, the Boundary commission has now proposed a parliamentary election area along the coastal strip which will destroy Brighton's Pavilion ward and the Lewes District area.

Probably will not be implemented due to Lib Dem opposition but wonder what NSC makes of it?

Would be good if it helps boot out Baker, but not sure the LibDems will vote for it after they didn't get their Lords reform.

Out here in Firle, folk generally feel a strong linkage with Lewes, the county town, the location of our district council and the place where we do most of our local shopping. We also look towards Brighton as our regional centre. It might seem sensible to find ourselves in a constituency called "Lewes and Brighton East".

But ... NO. They want to dump us into somewhere called "Uckfield". It makes no sense at all.

Looks good to me. Its a pretty natural congregation of urban areas. Likely to be a three way fight with maybe the Greens nicking some of the Lab and lib dem votes.

Also makes sense for me for Lewes and all the little villages and rural areas to be with Uckfield.

seems reasonable enough, but probably goes too far west to split East Brighton and Queens Park from the rest of Brighton. Woodingdean and Rottingdean dont "feel" like Brighton.

you wont please everyone, or even most people with boundry changes, some will be arbitary. but then some of the current ones are so its no change really.

The Brighton boundary changes look odd.

- Brighton Pavilion is the same, save losing Regency and Queen's Park wards.

- Hove is the same, except for gaining Regency ward (in other words, it would be Hove plus central Brighton).

- The Brighton & Seahaven one is weird. It's a host of (mostly) coastal wards from Queen's Park in the west to Seaford East in the east. The electoral commission states: "(Brighton East and Seahaven) recognises the links that exist between Brighton and the towns along the coast to the east..." Really? It seems a spurious reason to split a central-ish city ward (Queen's Park) and join it with something 11 miles away.

i would say seaford looks toward eastbourne more as its regional centre. I think newhaven is a more natural cut off point eastwards.

Whatever changes are made are going to be full of weirdness and anomaly. That's what happens when you decide to reduce the number of MPs ... constituencies that have natural boundaries, or at least boundaries that people have got used to, get distorted and disfigured.

As a Seaford resident I'd be happier being linked with the coastal strip to east Brighton than I was with the original proposal of being linked with Uckfield, but not as happy as I'd be staying within Lewes, along fairly similar boundaries to the district council area.

But it's all academic really as neither the Lib Dems nor the Labour party are going to support the proposals. If the Tories get a majority in the next election, maybe it will be a real issue.

Newhaven and Seaford do have a lot in common whereas east of Seaford there is only Friston and East Dean which really do look towards Eastbourne. Seaford certainly does not look towards Lewes. Brighton bound buses from Seaford are always busy. Overall this proposal makes more sense to me than being linked with Uckfield and Crowborough as was previously proposed.

fair points. I suppose cuckmere haven and friston forest are natural boundaries.

FWIW, if the voting patterns of constituency were repeated from the 2010 General Election, with these new boundaries, it would probably result in a Labour victory in Brighton Pavilion. And if it were the same candidates, that wouldn't be so bad, as I have met the Labour candidate, and she came across pretty well.

As a former Seaford resident I agree. Seaford looks towards Brighton and Eastbourne however, both would be a good link up imho. On the Lewes constituency question, why not join Lewes and Uckfield etc but name it the Lewes constituency. That would preserve the historic nature of the seat and keep East Sussex's county town in the national awareness.

As a resident of BoHo Kemp Town I have ZERO interest in being lumped in with the little pointless places up towards Newhaven. I'd far sooner be in a triangle encompassing the western edge of Kemp Town proper, Queen's Park and much of Hanover. Apart from some of the millionaires in Queens Park the voting for the Tories would be pitiful. Just how I like it

I thought all the Tarquins and Nigellas living in Queens Park who formerly resided in the London suburbs were staunch Greens.
