Poyet Backs Anti-Violence Campaign
Posted on: Wed 28 Apr 2010
By Will Jago

Gus Poyet has backed the 'Knot Violence' campaign, designed to promote an anti-violence message, which was launched last night at London's Ivy Club.

Along with a wealth of football stars including David James, Wilson Palacios, Ryan Babel, Luigi Buffon and South Africa captain Aaron Mokoena, the Albion boss will act as a role model for the Knot Violence campaign.

Each of the stars have put their own design onto a knotted gun statue, an emblem designed thirty years ago by Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd in memory of John Lennon's assassination in New York City. The designs are symbolic of the things which are important to the football stars individually, as well as demonstrating their commitment to the anti-violence message.

Clem Leech, Knot Violence UK campaign director said, "These artists provide a strong and recognisable link to our target market. Their style of street art makes our project and campaign far more accessible to young people who can relate to this form of urban art."

The statues will travel to numerous national football stadia before making their way to South Africa where they will be displayed at the Cool Britannia fan park for the duration of the World Cup finals.

The exclusive launch last night was hosted by Mokoena and attended by many other footballers and celebrities who support the cause. The launch also included a display of the statues from various players and information about the venues for their national tour.
