Since his retirement, Gary Neville hasn't let the grass grow under his feet when it comes to making a quid. Apart from his punditary with Sky, he's applied for planning permission to build a hotel & associated facilities close to Old Trafford.

Neville has been given the green light by the local planning committee & building is expected to commence next year.

As is the case in most developments like this, there were objections from the NIMBY's. One of the biggest objectors to the plan were no less then....Neville's former employers, Manchester United Football Club PLC!

BBC News - Gary Neville Old Trafford hotel approved

MUFC's reasons for objecting? To translate into plain English what the club spokesman was moaning about after the decision: Quite simply, they didn't like the idea of competition from nearby facilities. I'm no expert on planning whatsoever, but I do know that objecting on the grounds that a new business might take trade away is no grounds whatsoever.

Who says The Premier League is obsessed by money?!

Man Utd corporate-speak

Gary Neville's proposed testimonial-fans-donation hotel outside Old Trafford has been given the go-ahead, despite Man Utd's objections. In a statement, came this extraordinary sentence:

"MUFC have a strategic plan for the continuing enhancement of the area surrounding the stadium and this holistic vision includes hospitality, conference, retail and visitor facilities. The provision of third party facilities such as those proposed could undermine this vision to the detriment of its deliverability."

I was wondering if anyone here can TOP this with their own examples of corporate wankerage from their own lines of work?

Can't beat that offhand, but in laymans terms they are saying "We're blocking all competition, to fill our coffers, so we can pay even more to Shrek and 'worldclass' Carrick".

This just underlines the fact that they are a business rather than a club

Good on Gary Neville, always rated him as a player and his Sky punditry is much more informative than anyone else
