Liverpool striker (think he was on loan at West Ham last season). Saw something in one of the Sundays (Express I think) yesterday naming Brighton as one of several clubs interested (Crewe and Burnley I think were others mentioned). Anyone know anything?

Hope he's better than the last player to come to the Albion with Liverpool connections, who was also the son of a succesful player but always features in the all time list of worst ever Albion players.

Crewe have almost clinched the signing of Mellor... Either way it wont be us, Crewe could offer much more wages, have a nicer ground and are closer to his home.

I always thought Phil Neal was crap anyway. Neil Mellor's a good player. Would be an excellent acquisition from what I've seen of him (which isn't much).

He had a phenomenal scoring record for Liverpool reserves, and at one point there was all sorts of talk about him being "the new Michael Owen". A few nondescript appearances off the bench and in the Coca Cola Cup saw him farmed out to West Ham on loan though, and I don't think he has done an awful lot there.

He's still only young, and could be a decent prospect. But if we're after a striker, I'd rather go for someone with more experience. We need to hit the ground running this season, and not end up chasing the entire division after having to play a load of kids for the first 2-3 months of the season, like last time.

I think he might join us if his dad had anything to do with it, would be just the type of player to come in, make a name for himself and go on to become a bit of a legend. I do however see Crewe as a lot more likely, they have a good reputation for bringing on young talent and as someone mentioned it isn't too far from Liverpool so he wouldn't have to move home.

He was a "useless, over-paid, lazy, fat lump at West Ham" quote form my brother in law who is a west ham fan.

I heard similar things, but I think that factors went against him. He signed expecting to partner Defoe, but they then signed David Connolly. So he was never in the side and then Pardew started signing every has been striker under the sun and so he lost interest and asked to go back to mickey land.

Before the change of manager, Neil Mellor was about to sign a year long deal with Crewe. However, from a reliable source I heard that he would be interested in joining us.

Im inclined to believe this one - for two reasons.

1) I want to believe it.
2) Richie Morris and Nemo have left this well alone!

His Dad was awesome and very under-rated... saw his son play for Liverpool on the box, and looked good to me, but haven't seen that much of him to be honest...

I think our priorities are to get in a central midfielder and winger, both of whom can create chances, but I would be well-pleased if MM landed a half-decent striker as well, and I expect Mellor junior would come into that category...
