Went there years ago when I was a kid...We stayed with an Italian family and all I can remember are these funny looking houses and my dad sampling the local red wine!

I remember it being nice tho although granted that was near 30 years ago!

Places worth a visit are Alberobello, Taranto, Otranto, Castellana Grotte, and the Sassi caves at Matera. Its quite a poor non touristy area that has poor telephone and internet connectivity, so you will find it hard to keep up with the transfer speculation.

Gallipolli beach on a Saturday night, and the old town is good. Lecce is nice, I wouldn't bother with Bari though. As has been said, not tourist orientated but all the better for it.

Been a few times

As someone has said Matera (the sassi) although it's not in Puglia, but it's close enough. Bari is ok, the seaside fishing villages are nice, but he highlight of Puglia has to be the Trulli houses at Alberobello

If you like your pasta, orriechete (no idea if I've spelt this right) is supposed to come from down there, and Italy's best olive oil does too, as it's so blooming hot. If you do go to Bari, have a good look at the harbour. One of the most vicious battles in WWII took place there, but hardly anyone seems to have heard about it. This gives a bit of information:

Poisonous Inferno: WWII Tragedy at Bari Harbour: Amazon.co.uk: George Southern: Books

I have a connection, as it was there my Granddad was invalided out of the Royal Yacht Squadron, and never really recovered. One day I will visit and see where it all happened. If you like cathedral architecture as well, Puglia is the place to go.
