I find these spats quite interesting. Journalism seems to be in a bit of turmoil regarding what I call the democracy of opinion.

You are paid (and your companies pays) to get your opinion out there and yet you have to do it using a medium where anyone else can comment for free.

Include newspapers in that with their comment sections.

Journalists ( I think) fall into the trap of thinking their opinion (since it is paid employment ) when published is more valid.

Unfortunately it isn't.

I just read this in the Spectator from the brilliant Nick Cohen. It suggests that good writers not only DO ignore the comments below the line / twitter responses, but that, to stay sane, they SHOULD.

Perhaps Mr Naylor could spend half an hour or so reading and digesting this advice and the rest of his career following it?
