Well this move has been rumoured for a long while and no other PL team has come in for him. That should say something about his performance level and the the fee that we received.
Only in England is ending up in Napoli rather than Ipswich a sign that you're a bad footballer.

I just heard this on the radio earlier but McTominay scored 10 goals for Man Utd last season. Compared to Gilmour 0

Yeah but that’s because Ten Hag played him further forward. His role was to get into the box late and be disruptive, in the same way how plays for Scotland. In fact when he put him back into a more defensive midfield later on, he wasn’t scoring.

I can understand the meltdown.

This only leaves us with Weiffer, Beleba, Milner, O'Riley, Moder, Ayari, Gruda and Hinshelwood to fill those 2 spots in CM.
End of thread! :lolol:

Yes the fee is low, but I'd like to think it's out of respect to WBG. Look at those names! When (IF!) they're all fit can you see WBG being a regular starter?

He's a good player, a popular player, and when it became obvious that he wasn't going to be the first name on the teamsheet this season I think the club have acted decently to let him go cheaply in search of regular 1st team football. (Having said that it's not 100% altruistic on the club's part as he hasn't gone to a rival PL team. Maybe that was part of the bargain?)

I personally am gutted to see him go, I really liked him. However I shall console myself with the fact that my little Brighton and Hove Albion consider a player of the calibre of Billy Gilmour to be just a squad player. I still can't get over where we are as a club.

EDIT; Now watch us have a massive injury crisis ....

Still amazed some on here still think this wasn't entirely driven by WBG. Even more amazed that people seem to be surprised a player would see Napoli under Conte as more appealing than us.
File under the same category as De Zerbi’s departure.

So many people needed black or white, they simply couldn’t handle the grey of the mutual separation suiting both parties. The result of this parting is that De Zerbi is smashing it in the Ligue 1 as we sit with the same points total in the Premier League.

Gilmour will do very well indeed under Conte, they know exactly what they were getting. Whilst with no Gilmour, we can go to one of the favourites for the title and still look competitive. It suited both parties, the fee should be confirmation of that. He if was 1st choice (and had dodgy agents like Caicedo), we’d be holding for more than £30m+. We let him go for the good of the player, for the good of our new manager and the good of our squad (in relation to midfield goals and defensive actions).

There's quite a bit of difference between...

1. I want to leave Brighton & Hove Albion no matter what, and
2. I want to leave Brighton & Hove Albion if I'm no longer going to be starting regularly.

I have no inside knowledge, but I suspect it's very much a case of 2, rather than 1.
Almost certainly.....

Absolutely, and not just "I want to leave Brighton & Hove Albion if I'm no longer going to be starting regularly" but, "I want to leave Brighton & Hove Albion if I'm no longer going to be starting regularly, and I've got a sensational offer from one of Europe's historic clubs on the table waiting for me."

I'll still be a WBG fan going forward.

How do we know nobody else enquired about him? Just because we don’t know about it doesn’t mean nobody did. Newcastle were interested at one point apparently. That he said he only wanted to go to Napoli suggests to me he might have had other options.

Anyway, he’s gone now, so we might as well move on.
That particular rumour always seemed like nonsense.

Eddie Howe is obsessed with physicality. Just don't see him ever signing a player like Gilmour, who was sadly, a reasonable PL footballer trapped in the body of a 14 year old child.

2. That was very much the reason he left Chelsea to come to us.

Perhaps their reputation as smart negotiators?
Yes, B&HA have developed a reputation as smart negotiators -- and WBG to Napoli is going to have zero impact on that. B&HA also have a reputation of not standing in the way of a player/coach who wants to move on provided the deal is right -- and WBG to Napoli will reinforce that.

Limiting damage to what/who ?
To us as negotiators. To how fans see the club and the deal. To the fact that, for a second season in a row, we’ve lost our first choice midfield from the previous year and we now have Milner in there as a go to option.

I mean it’s not a good deal from the club’s perspective, there’s no getting around that.
