you can download the filters from microsoft to allow you to open docx files........sadly I can't remember the link exactly but I've had to do it at work, will update this if I find them.

Last time i done something like that i just needed to print it, you can download a MS Word viewer from the Microsoft website which allows you to view and print documents.

If you just need to view or print it i suggest doing this.

I believe the docx is the Word 2007 format. Certainly Word 2003 has filters that will enable you to load up a docx as a doc - not sure about earlier versions of Word.
Wot u runnin?

Doesn't help but the new Office file formats are actually "zip" files, containing XML files that contain the actual data.

If you don't believe me, change the extension to .zip, right click and extract.

Images contained in word, powerpoint documents can be directly extracted like that.

On the point in hand, I think that there are free tools from Microsoft that allow you open them in earlier versions of word as mentioned above.
