Took my van for it's MOT yesterday, which was fully serviced only in June, and was told that pretty much the entire chassis needs welding, there was a DANGEROUS oil leak and a whole bunch of other things.

When I asked for a quote on the work to be carried out I was told "I daan't do prices on weldin'". So again I politely asked for just a rough estimate just to have a vague idea. £60 an hour I was told, again I asked roughly how many hours he thought it would be. "Araaand ten ta twelve hars mate." Then he told me he'd do all the work for £1000! Seeing as I only paid around £1500 for the van I said no way, at which point I was advised to "torch it innit". Then obviously realising this wouldn't get him any dough he offered to do the work for £500. I was obviously not too sure about these guys and decided to get a second opinion and get pre MOT test and works estimate for £25 from another garage.

"Small plate needs welding under the pedals and there's a small leak from the steering box, £195 for the repairs and the MOT."

I'm really incensed about how the first garage tried to rip me off and although I was suspicious I did consider the offer of £500 and even borrowed some money off a friend to take it there. :tantrum:

Is there any government body that I can report these clowns to?

As someone has already said - VOSA - MOT Enquiry Line

A few years ago I had a similar experience and thought what a load of rubbish so immediately took the car elsewhere and had it MOT'd without telling them what had happened.

Sure enough it passed and then I called VOSA to complain. They arranged for the 1st garage to re MOT my car in the presence of one of their 'expert' engineers who did the required 're-training'.

I got my money back but no apology from the garage

If you use just mot's then you won't get ripped of as they don't carry out repairs, you then have 10 days to arrange for the car to be repaired and a free re-test, at least that way you can shop around for the cheapest quote.
