The club often has games where minimal gate prices are charged just to get punters through the door and create a better atmosphere. After all its always around Xmas and people generally have less cash. How do you think we got a crowd of nearly 31,000 at home to Exeter last boxing day.

All they want to do is make the game accessible to fans, which includes Shrewsbury fans by the way, and the only possible conclusion you can draw to Shrewsbury opposing this is because they had ideas of cashing in on the size of our stadium. Anyway, if the Shrews had their way and prices were increased to a normal level, the crowd would be poor which would counter act the increase.

I'm quite aware of the story, I was commenting on the tone of the statement.

They have a perfect right to do so (at normal prices, not inflated), irrespective whether we mostly agree that is is usual for the FA cup to be priced lower these days.

This isn't the first example of a disagreement between clubs - but absolutely the first when I've seen one of the clubs make a nasty little public statement like that on their website.

I'd be ashamed.

It amazes me that both sets of fans take glib potshots at each other, (especially the pathetic efforts we get from redneb) when the rest of the country believes - no, KNOWS - that they are a disgusting blight on football, and a marked lesson on how to treat football (be it be in the form of clubs, fans and authority) like shit.

The abuse at Southampton FC seems misdirected. Why should the club be blamed into reducing ticket prices? A stadium of over 30,000 playing in the third tier of the pyramid! Even Man U wouldn't fill it!

We can't fill our poxy 9000 ground & are top of the league!!

Am I missing something here? Shrewsbury wanted full price as they hoped the large (by the standards of the 1st round of the FA Cup) Southampton fanbase would loyally turn up regardless of the opposition and thus they (Shrewsbury) could get a decent pay day. Southampton on the other hand have said "f*** that, our fans don't want to pay full price to see your noddy little club in the 1st round of the FA Cup. Not these days."

They could have maybe phrased it better but I agree with the sentiments. I think if Woking had taken the same stance we'd have said something similar - especially as judging by the posts on NSC recently most Brighton fans don't give a shit about the FA Cup either.

Totally agree. As much as I dislike Scumhampton they are only doing what is right for their own fans and club as we are doing with Woking.

It's got nothing to do with the actual ticket prices - it is their arrogant, over the top article on the website which completely undermines Shrewsbury.

The FA Cup has been a cash cow for lesser clubs pretty much throughout its history. Why not and why should it change now when small clubs' financial pressures are probably greater than ever? To suggest that they were thinking of Shrewsbury's fans is as disingenuous and arrogant as the south coast club's response. It was self-important and uncalled-for.

Shrewsbury had EVERY right to complain as the FA rules are very clear that entry prices for an FA Cup tie must be agreed by BOTH clubs. Unlike league games where the home side keeps all revenue, the gate receipts for an FA Cup game are split (after operating expenses) 10% to the FA and 45% to EACH club.

A good draw in the cup is the only opportunity many clubs get to make significant extra cash and can be the difference between surviving or not.

The competition is structured precisely to allow smaller clubs to benefit and for Southampton to deny this entirely out of self interest and without concern for their opponents' financial standing is disingenuous and - bearing in mind how recently they were in financial crisis - it is frankly disgraceful

I think most people have no problems with the sentiments. There was, after all a thread or two on here calling for reduced ticket prices for the woking game. My problem-and I suspect most other people's- is with the arrogance inherent in the official statement. It's not the most professional or classy of ways of going about their business is it?
