""Cllr O'Keeffe said: "Lewes is a combination of a large number of people who are well-organised, intelligent and dislike being told what to do and if you add that to the high number of people who have a lot of skill with small explosives then this is the effect.""

Vandals using explosives to blow up parking meters have continued their war against the machines and struck twice in four days.

More than 30 machines have been damaged in Lewes since the meters were installed two years ago.

The latest explosions took place on Saturday December 30 2006 and Tuesday January 2 this year.

Both meters were positioned between King Henry's Road and Western Road.

East Sussex County Councillor for Lewes Ruth O'Keeffe said she believed Lewes now had the worse record in the country for damage to parking meters and they had become impossible to insure.

She said: "It's a terrible shame because it's criminal damage and using any profit the council may have made to go back into the district."

She said many believe the vandals are acting in protest against the council's controlled parking scheme.

Cllr O'Keeffe said: "Lewes is a combination of a large number of people who are well-organised, intelligent and dislike being told what to do and if you add that to the high number of people who have a lot of skill with small explosives then this is the effect."

The total cost of the damage, which has included graffiti and scratches as well as explosions, is more than £300,000.

Cllr O'Keeffe said money which would have been used to pay for improvements to transport schemes is now spent on replacing the meters.

John Ticehurst, Lewes District Commander, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, warned lives could be lost if the vandals continue.

He said: "If someone, those responsible or a passer-by, got hit by shrapnel then it is potentially extremely serious.

"They could cause serious injury or loss of life."

Damage to parking meters has been reported elsewhere in the district as far away as Newick and in other areas of Sussex including Brighton and Hove and Hastings.

A reward of £5,000 is being offered to anyone with information leading to a conviction of anyone involved in the vandalism.

Anyone with information can contact Lewes Police on 0845 6070 999 and quote Op Magee. (WHERE did they get that name from ???)

Ruth O'Keeffe a nutter?

I think not.

She is an independent councillor who got elected to Lewes District Council (in Ann de Vecchi's ward) on a wave of anti-Lib Dem sentiment four years ago.

She also defeated Liz Sleeper (aka Mrs Norman Baker) in a previously 'safe' Lib Dem ward in the East Sussex County Council elections two years ago.

Must admit that i quite like her. Spoke to her a few times and quite enjoy reading her "castle news" leaflet.

Whoever's behind this campaign of blowing up the parking meters in Lewes is doing a great job, long may it continue.

The parking restrictions in Lewes (and, increasingly, in many other towns I work in) have little or nothing in common with improving traffic flow and everything to do with raising revenue from the (soft touch) motorist. Because of the revenue already generated, it's highly unlikely that any councils will reverse their policy on parking through legal means (campaigning, letter writing, etc) so if civil disobedience generates change, then so be it.

I'm constantly on my toes in Lewes, keeping an eye out for the wardens as I nip in and out of houses as there become fewer places to park for free and I'm not there long enough to justify car park charges (another abysmal tax on the motorist).

Keep up the good work, Rocket Man (or woman)

Is she for the stadium at Falmer?

Interesting enough Midhurst is due to introduce parking charges from April so I wonder if this new line in work will spread.

Whoever is doing this is well organised to say the least - the repiar costs are very high as well and hits the council in the pocket albeit the council tax payers ultimately pay the cost.

Tends to focus on local and more direct issues within her ward, and I'm pretty sure has refrained from making a comment about the stadium. In all honesty from what I know (and this isn't a lot, was my teacher at primary school), her personal views may well be against the stadium, but isn't taking any action on this.

I'm not sure if you're being ironic but I agree with you! Unlike the French we English are usually far to timid and supine to protest so it's great to see someone mounting an active and effective protest campaign. Maybe they can be persuaded to, er, widen their range of targets.

(Not that I'm in favor of violence of course which obviously is always wrong).

I'm not being ironic - whoever's behind this has my full backing. I hope it generates the rethink which is so clearly needed (but wouldn't bank on it).

Unlikely - Lewes is a town full of pyromaniacs. I think of it as Royston Veysey with explosives:flameboun

In public, she's been silent on the stadium - but she was very helpful when we did the petition against the LDC decision to submit the original appeal. She phoned me up with some advice about how to present our case at the Council meeting.
