I have had a contract for a while, and was looking at options for upgrades etc. One option I was looking at is Pay as You Go. But it seems that I can't take my T-Mobile no with me to Pay as You Go.

Does this sound correct ? I am tempted to tell them to stuff their number, but of course business contacts etc all have this number.

Over here, you most definately can move your number to RTG on either the same or a different network. Its the standard GSM Full Number Portability. I'd suggest moaning at One2One or contacting whoever the hell the telecoms regulator is in the UK (OFCOM?)

I converted from contract to pay as you go a couple of years ago. I was on T-mobile(or whatever it was called then) and they let me keep the number.

They say that you can't do that now, but after some discussion it seems that in some cases you can transfer it. The stupid thing is I wasn't sure I wanted to, but having been told I couldn't ............

Try Virgin

You can type in your present number to see if you can transfer to their PAYG.
