Some of them need to be playing though: surprised one of them didn't play against Pakistan to see what they're like. The Ashes is no series to be blooding newbies. It would be good to have a left-armer again (I think Rankin is Irish again) Curran is very much for the future though.

Never a mention of Rushworth - guess he's missed his chance now

Just seen that article about Rankin.

Makes sense I guess for him to go back to playing for Ireland.

Rushworth does not seem to appear in dispatches.

I would certainly take Overton or Curran along for the ride in South Africa. Patel will not go and is there any point in taking Rashid?

They have to take a couple of kids along and blood at least one of them - great opportunity with Wood resting from his op. DeVilliers would be licking his lips at thought of tucking into Rashid's buffet

They will want Finn down there, but sometimes a skiddy bowler can cause mayhem.

Is Wood definitely out?

I think he's in danger of missing out but not definite. Is it worth risking him even if he's given the OK? Rest him up and make sure he's fit for the Ashes series, throw in a couple of youngsters and see how they do

Well, they've got neither - they're both out

I agree with UB, they should take at least one youngster - Overton probably as Curran's too young - but it will be the opening pair plus Plunkett, Woakes and Jordan (sigh).

I think there are a potential English quicks out there, Jamie Overton and Tom Curran to start with.

Last season Rankin seemed to be getting it back together, but I suspect he has a more fragile confidence than Finn.

Footitt will be playing first division cricket next season, so that should give a clearer picture if he is up to it. As will Willey and Topley.

Mills was the other one that the selectors seemed to have earmarked, but as between him and Lewis Hatchett they can just about put together a working human body, that is unlikely to happen.

Now the spinner issue for England is a whole different matter....

There's been a few that have shown promise in the shorter game, but form and injury have stopped them - Dernbach & Meaker at Surrey immediately spring to mind. Both capable in the 4 day game as well.
