I wish people who moan about stuff would get their own house in order. ie, get Colons in thier signatures before a direct quote.

Right.

It depends on the house style of any given publisher as to which punctuation mark goes before an open quotation mark.

At school, I was taught 'colon, quote'. The first publishers I worked for used 'semi-colon, quote'. The next place used 'comma, quote'. The place I'm at now uses 'comma, quote'.

All of these variations, it seems, are acceptable.

I seem to remember grammar being half of one English lesson in the mid 80's at the bastion of all education establishments that was Longhill High.

For my History Degree its, 'colon, quote'. But only for direct quotes such as:

During World War Two, Hitler said: 'all Jews are bad'.

But I could have worte:

During World War Two 'all Jews are bad' was somthing Hitler used to say.

anyway.

:laugh:This thread gets better and better! What really annoys me is people who don't know how to use apostrophes just sticking them in "willy nilly". Why don't they just stop using them all together?

What?

Can you not see a typo when you see one?

It was a typo, but I think 'written' might have been a better word than 'wrote'.

No need for the giggles from Notters, mind.

If you can hear Notters mind giggling then you are sitting way too close..and surely ,with economy in mind,'wrote' has to be a better word than 'written'...!!
