The Sun - What do you expect? Wankers

Just had a look at the Millwall message board though....I won't be spending any internet time on there, that's for sure.

Here's the article:

RACISM has raised its ugly head again in soccer. A few morons here and in Spain have put the game back in the dock and marred the good work of the Kick Racism Out Of Football campaign.
Despite Millwall's efforts to banish the problems, the South East London club have become the first to be charged by the Football Association over their fans' alleged racist behaviour.

Millwall dispute the charge that Liverpool's Djimi Traore was racially abused by their supporters during a home game on October 26.

We sent football fan RAYMOND ENISUOH, sports editor of New Nation – a paper aimed at the black community – to Millwall's New Den to judge the club's efforts to stamp out racism.

HOW bad is the situation at Millwall?

The club's chairman, Theo Paphitis has vehemently defended his fans' behaviour and claimed that the allegations are ridiculous.

He said “God knows what the FA are up to. We are still waiting for them to tend us their evidence.”

“I just find the whole thing staggering, the charges are completely ridiculous and we'll see what evidence they have to back it up.”

But when I attended Millwall's fiery home match against Brighton on Saturday on behalf of The Sun. I found a different story.

Even at I got off the Tube at Surrey Quays, an elderly fan warned me against taking a popular short cut to the New Den stadium through the local estate "for my own safety."

I took the long way around to the ground arriving about 45 minutes before kick off.
After buying my ticket with no hassle. I walked through the turnstiles and took my unreserved seat at the CBL lower block and waited patiently for the three o'clock kick off.

Struggling to keep warm in the freezing temperature. I noticed that although incoming Millwall fans had no problem sitting around me, no one actually sat directly next to me, leaving me on a row by myself.

I spent the remaining minutes until kick-off reading a newspaper and the only friendly smiles came from a couple of kids.

There was only one other black fan nearby although three of the stewards facing the crowd were black Two more were from ethnic minorities.

The match kicked off with all the usual fanfare. Millwall outsang the small section of visiting fans but there was nothing really offensive at first apart from the occasional swear words. Former Lions manager Mark McGhee, now in charge of Brighton, came in for a lot of personal abuse from the home fans but their attentions were soon directed elsewhere.

A miskick from Millwall's black player Barry Hayles was met with some disturbing jeers "You f***ing animal!" shouted some one to the top left of me

Just minutes later I could distinctly hear monkey-grunting noises on the stand above me. The mood was beginning to grow ugly. As the first half drew to a close, the temperature rose. I could hardly believe my ears as I heard staccato chants that took a few moments to register.

"Sieg heil. Sieg heil." (German for "hail victory") was being chanted by some fans and it was increasing in volume.

I even spotted some figures, thankfully far away, throwing Nazi salutes.

A fan behind me, with his family in tow, embarrassingly avoided eye contact.
"Bloody racists." he said to his wife and children, making sure that I1 could hear.

As sports editor of New Nation. I have covered my share of football matches at Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and elsewhere. But I have never known anything as sinister as the chants coming from the small section above me.

After the half time Interval, things got even worse. One black steward had a number of missiles thrown in his direction. But after making several complaints, he obviously decided to just ignore the cans and plastic bottles that were being caught in safety net ting in front of him.

The chants from the home crowd were now mostly of the familiar: "The referee's a wanker nature. But when a black player went down injured the "Sieg heil" chants started again and my mood turned sour.

A few fans nearby, noticing my discomfort, laughed. But on the whole, the majority just ignored it. Directly in front of me were two official placards that read "Lions Against Racism Kick It Out" and: "The Lions Have Pride Not Prejudice."
But these words appeared to be lost on the ignorant minority of fans, mainly on the stand above me, who routinely jeered black players from both sides. They only seemed pleased with anything black when Millwall's Paul If III scored in the 78th minute.

The football on display on this windy afternoon was exciting. But there was a vicious undercurrent that became more prominent in the second half. And as hard as I tried, I couldn't feel a part of the victory celebrations going on all around me as Millwall cruised to a 2-0 win.

Sat in a row all by myself. I felt alone but grateful that I had used my better judgment and not got a ticket in the upper stand.

After the final whistle, the photographer who accompanied me said he'd seen the same section on the stand above me unfurl a racist banner, and I made my way out as quickly as I could. Outside the stadium there was heavy police presence.

I had intended to go for a drink nearby to test the atmosphere in the pub afterwards.
But after what I had just experienced I decided to give it a miss.

"No one likes us. We don’t care," is the Millwall fans' anthem. Maybe after the FA finally take action against their minority of hardcore racist fans, they can start singing a new tune.

It says he went to 'judge the clubs efforts', yet no mention is made of him meeting any Millwall representatives to have their club and community initiatives (past, present and future) on this issue laid out for his judgement.

He merely sat in a stand, had his picture taken looking fed-up (a miraculous achievement in itself given that the photographer with him suspiciously failed to capture a single one of the heinous acts of racism described) and cleared off I suspect.

In whatever interim there was, and despite his vast football knowledge, he patently mis-interpreted (being very charitable there) the chants and behaviour of both sets of fans. i say both because this goon is talking about us whether he realises it or not.

Back to the Sun/New Nation magazine with a couple of snaps, an incorrect take on the fans interaction with each other and the players. One bag of stereotype embellishments added later and you have an article.

I'm sorry but he's CLEARLY misheard the chants of 'Seagulls' to mean Sieg Heil.

What a f***ing PRICK.

I guess it's fortunate that we didn't sing "Build a Bonfire" on Saturday

Otherwise he may have written about the shameful way in which supporters attacked former Goodie Bill Oddie

Alternatively he's probably planning a trip down to the South Coast this weekend to buy some good old "Sausage" by the Sea

'But when a black player went down injured the "Sieg heil" chants started again'

I distinctly remember us going "Seagulls, Seagulls" when Leon won a free kick close to the corner flag.

Now that is just being silly. EVERYONE does that to EVERYONE else. If I get on the train I ALWAYS look to see if I can find an empty set of seats before sitting with others, if I am on my own. Its just natural. Unless I am just wierd?

Posted on other thread, too. Have just sent PCC this message, suitably edited and sent to Sun too.

I must write, as a journalist myself, to complain about the inaccurate, biased and wholly damaging reporting by Raymond Enishouh in today's Sun newspaper concerning the Millwall v Brighton football match on Saturday. He has clearly broken Section One of the PCC's Code of Practice.

It seems this journalist had a headline in mind when he went to Millwall's ground, and wrote a story to fit. I am a Brighton supporter living in SE London, and I know the great efforts that Millwall FC have made to irradicate racism from their football club.

Brighton fans chant "SEAGULLS" (the club's nickname) throughout all games, and as with all football clubs, throw their arms forward when chanting. It's what happens at football matches, a vain effort to propel your singing onto the pitch and spur your team on. The "Sieg Heils" to which the reporter says came from Millwall fans were in fact "Seagulls" chants coming from Brighton fans. Does this so-called sports editor actually know anything about football?

He claims Millwall fans booed when one of their black players was substituted - in fact, if he hadn't been so quick to jump to wrong conclusions, he would have realised that the Millwall supporters were booing their manager for substituting one the team's best players.

The report is full of inaccuracies such as these. Such ill-researched and subjective journalism, published in a newspaper such as the Sun, does Millwall Football Club, south east London and the country in general much harm and will do a great deal of damage to race relations in this country.

I urge the PCC to discipline The Sun newspaper accordingly.

For a football fan he doesn't seem to know a lot about the behaviour of football corwds.

Maybe the only games he's seen were on the tele?

I'm not so sure he is - the clue is in the article:

More seriously, though, this is the kind of shoddy journalism which does enormous damage to just about everyone concerned - not just both clubs and the vast majority of their fans, but also to the campaigns which have done so much to eradicate racism on the terraces. The Sun, after Hillsborough, should have learnt their lesson about commenting on things they clearly know nothing about. Why anybody should read this pathetic rag is beyond me.

Quick question, wouldn't the photography have got this on film?

Secondly, I went for a drink after the game with some mates in a Millwall pub and had a chat with a few Millwall fans with no problems.

I just can't get my head around the irony of this whole thing.

I will bow to no-one in my hatred of the Sun, having got batten-charged by police outside Wapping.

But having spent decades pushing racist filth into Britain with their xenophobia and their immigration/asylum seeker scare stories, it seems barely credible that when they finally decide to do something to help the anti-racist cause, the Sun fucks up this badly

The Seagulls/Seig Heil thing is an astonishing error if this guy cannot be 100% sure it came from the Millwall fans in the tier above him.

I'm not going to make up my mind on all this until I've heard the guy from the New Nation respond to the criticisms, but it will be a sad day if it is proved that the Sun's deplorable sensationalism and slipshod standards infected his journalism and indirectly ended up ridiculing the anti-racist cause.

Hold on...a report about how bad racism is - in The Sun....Is this the same newspaper who runs front page headlines about the terrible immigrants coming to the UK and stealing our jobs and the same Sun who reported in the past how much they agree with Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech???? SURELY NOT!!! I thought they were all Socialists who previously worked for Militant!

What a load of self righteous pompous sh*t

I find this totally rubbish. The guy knows nothing about football even if he is the Sports Editor. Milwall have taken masive strides in recent months to eridicate this element of their fan base. I will admit that I am sure they have a Hard Core set of fans but then so do we and every other team in the country.

All I can think is that he was at a differnt game to the rest of us.
