I've just seen the incident on Sky. As I suspected at the time, the ball had NOT gone out of play, and McPhee would have been clean away.

There is a clear "no man's land" space betwen the edge of the coaches box and the touchline. Newell had gone out into that area and involved himself in the game. No-brainer - he has to go.

I agree with the people who say that there should be some heavy punishment from the FA for this. If he's left alone, then sooner or later, some manager will take it a stage further and make a tackle on the pitch.

The FA should send a clear signal that such behaviour won't be tolerated (but I bet they won't).

Now that would be funny. I'd pay top dollar to see that.

What cracked me up was when the ref came over to talk to Newell, he pointed behind him at the South Stand as if saying that it was only us that got him sent off. He then gave the South Stand an 'ironic' wave. The twat.

Have some dignity, man.

A minor factor that might have contributed to this incident is the fact that, for the second half, the normal Withdean practice of storing spare balls around the ground had been abandoned. There was only one match ball in use.

Why was this?

My understanding is that the liberal availability of spare balls is subject to the agreement of both teams. Presumably it was Newell who pulled the plug on this at half time.

True. But he got sent off as a suitable punishment.

NO, NO, and another bloody NO !

How the hell is it a suitable punishment. McPhee would have kept it in, I'm convinced of it, so we were denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Result: Their manager watches from the stands and they get a throw in !!!!!!

HOW, is that a suitable punishment Biscuit, and how is this funny? I was livid at the time and I'm livid now. As Easy says, where does it stop? The truth is that a player could be tripped by a physio running round the pitch, or a coach just charging out and rugby tackling someone ... there is no suitable punishment for that game, as they are a non-player so a sending off makes diddly difference and it can't be a free kick.

I hope they throw the book at him but they won't because it's outside the Premiership. Just look at Warnock, what was his punishment for that abandoned game against WBA? Can anyone remember?

The Premeiership is all that matters to the rule-makers and the rest of us can just rot.

YES, I am angry.

Probably not - although it was an infringement of the rules by one of the teams on the field of play.

Shouldn't it have been a dropped ball, though - just as if a dog had run on to the pitch and interfered with play?

Are there any referees out there who will know the rules better than me?

He should be made an example of.

What he did was idiotic, it made me quite sick whem i saw it on sky, McPhee would have been away and clear through on goal.
Fine him, ban him and make sure every other manager/coach/physio knows exactly what the technical area is for and that interfering with anything on the field of play is strictly forbidden.

What if it had been in the play offs and we had needed a couple of goals?

That's exactly the problem, I'm sure it's not possible to give a free-kick. Drop ball if something had stopped the play, such as a dog taking off with the ball. But in this case the ball ran out of play without Newell touching it, so it's a throw.

But he did INFRINGE on the play and should be severely punished. However, I'm sure there is nothing in the rules to award us anything. Even if there was, a free kick on the halfway line would hardly have been a compensation for missing out on Mcphee breaking away in the clear.

That's EXACTLY why it shouldn't just be laughed off, as next time it could be that crucial, it could be the last minute of a play-off game and I bet it's Neil Warnock !!!

I thought the ref brought an end to it when, in the first half, Luton were about to take a throw-in and a ball that had gone out of play re-appeared on the pitch, causing what should have been a short delay.

The delay was longer than it needed to be because Kevin Nicholls booted the ball somewhat harder than he needed to in the direction of the South Stand. As a result it bounced off the South Stand and straight back onto the pitch.

When this happened, the ref made a gesture to the 4th official. At the time I interpreted it as 'one ball from now on'.

Yep - I think we ask for the multi-ball thing because it increases the speed of the game and the ref usually agrees to it.

But as soon as there's a cock-up - ie two balls on the pitch because one has bounced back, or an over-enthusiastic ball boy (one of them looked about six years old yesterday) throws it on, then the ref usually pulls the plug.

Speaking of Nicholls, he shouldn't have come out for the second half. As they went off at half time he (and others) were involved in a bit of a fracas, in which he appeared to push Oatway in the face. If the ref had seen it, having already booked him during the first half, he'd have sent him off.

NAY NAY, and thrice NAY.

The ball had NOT gone out of play. Newell was standing at the exact spot the ball WOULD have rolled out of play, at the exact time McPhee arrived there as well. McPhee basically had to tackle Newell to keep the ball in, and it flew off 20 yards up the pitch but still in play. Of course, as Newell had got in the way, McPhee had no chance of following it up, and the ref decided the simplest thing was just to award the throw and reprimand Newell.

I have seen this incident once live, and 3 times on Sky, and it gets WORSE every time I see it. Newell was so out of order its unbelievable. Its merely the fact that we got all 3 points that this outrageous incident will pass by without a fuss, but Newell should be utterly ashamed of himself. He crossed a line (literally).

I disagree Hamilton, it only went out because Newell prevented McPhee from keeping it in play [ and running in on goal].

The image of the grinning Newell as he was sent to the stand haunted me last night, and it does now. He KNOWS he played a blinder for his team there, as McPhee was away and clear.
