MCC help Middlesex sign Gilchrist
Date released: 19 November 2009

Middlesex County Cricket Club have secured the services of Australian legend Adam Gilchrist, to spearhead their challenge for Twenty20 honours in 2010.

Gilchrist in typical post - celebrating another wicket for Australia Gilchrist, who retired from international cricket in 2007, has since successfully captained the Hyderabad based Deccan Chargers to the Indian Premier League title in 2009, winning the Player of the Tournament trophy in the process.

His tally of 931 runs for the Chargers also made him the tournament’s all-time leading run scorer and he still proudly holds the IPL’s record for the fastest ever hundred - off just 42 balls.

Announcing the signing of Adam Gilchrist to the Middlesex CCC ranks for 2010, Chief Executive, Vinny Codrington said:

Codrington: 'We’ve worked extremely closely with the MCC' "We are absolutely delighted to have secured Adam’s services for our 2010 Friends Provident Twenty20 campaign.

"We have no doubt that his world class ability and natural competitive spirit will have a huge part to play in making Middlesex a side that challenge for honours in the tournament in 2010.

"We’ve worked extremely closely with the MCC to ensure that Adam comes on board with us next season.

"This signing is great testament to how well our two clubs are working together to guarantee that Middlesex supporters and MCC members alike are rightfully treated to the very best world talent that Twenty20 cricket has on offer.

"Under the new ECB rules, stipulating that each county can utilise the services of two overseas players for the 2010 season, all of us at Middlesex and the MCC felt that a player of Adam’s calibre and quality would be of huge benefit.

"We are currently working extremely hard behind the scenes to secure a second overseas addition, and are hopeful that we will be able to make an announcement regarding this in the very near future.

"All of us are extremely excited and looking forward to Adam joining up with us next year and to him showing the Lord’s crowds just what he can do."

Gilchrist spoke of his delight at the prospect of playing Twenty20 cricket at the Home of Cricket: "It’s a great honour to be approached by Middlesex to play in their Twenty20 side next year at the home of cricket.

"In 1989 I played for Richmond in the Middlesex League, and I am incredibly excited to be returning to London some twenty years later to play for the county.

"Playing domestic cricket in England is the last important piece in my resume as a professional cricketer and I feel very fortunate that I can now realise this ambition at Lord’s with Middlesex in 2010."

In response to stories in the press today that Sachin Tendulkar is joining Adam Gilchrist on his way to Lord’s, Codrington had: "Middlesex are able to confirm that we have also been in consultation with both Sachin Tendulkar and his agent about him joining Middlesex in 2010.

Tendulkar: 'In consulation' with Middlesex "As a result of Sachin’s busy schedule of late however; representing India in the one day series against Australia; playing in the current Test series against Sri Lanka and celebrating his twenty years in International cricket; this is yet to be confirmed.

"He is due to be speaking to the BCCI about playing for us next season when the time is right, and we are disappointed that this news has been made public before Sachin has had the opportunity to hold those conversations.

"Middlesex are however confident that our conversations with Sachin and his agent will be fruitful and we obviously look forward to officially announcing the outcome of this in the very near future."

MCC Secretary and Chief Executive, Keith Bradshaw added: "MCC is delighted at the news that Adam Gilchrist will play for Middlesex during next year's Friends Provident Twenty20 matches.

"This initiative clearly demonstrates how closely MCC and Middlesex are working together and is an example of the close relationship between the two clubs.

"We both agree how important it is to increase attendances at Lord's, and the signing of Adam Gilchrist - who is amongst the best specialists in Twenty20 cricket and one of the most exciting cricketers in the world - shows our joint commitment to fill Lord's during Middlesex's Twenty20 campaign next year."
