Respect to the Albion fans who made the long trip up to Teesside for last nights game. Good turnout without question and vocal too. That’s as many as West Ham, Southampton and Charlton brought to Teesside last season. pat yourselves on the back!
Having scanned the ‘This is Albion‘, Argus website, which indicated Albion pushed Boro ‘All the way‘ and in a ‘near empty‘ Riverside Stadium, I was left with the impression there is a certain balance to be redressed.
In taking nothing away from Brighton - they were indeed spirited opponents - who Steve Coppel has moulded into a well organised and enthusiastic team, to say that Boro were ever in any genuine danger throughout the match would be bending the truth. Boro never got going for the first half-hour. Brighton’s game paln I’m sure would have been to keep things tight early on, from there on Boro had control of the game playing with discipline and method. All the quality came from the home side - as you would expect from a expensively assembled squad - and on another evening the game would ahve been out of sight of Albion well before any extra-time.
As for the attendance, we were surprised that Albions following was as healthy as it was. But by no means was the stadium near empty. In excess of 10,000 represents a third full. Again a healthy turnout for a game against lowly league opposition.
Nevertheless, well done to Albion. They did the town and themselves proud and i hope for some sucess for Steve Coppell. He is genuinely one of footballs decent blokes. And isn’t it funny how Ben Roberts never ever admitted to being a Mackem whilst he was at the Boro? Now we understand the Di Matteo Cup Final goal after 43 seconds a whole lot more!!!
Come on Boro
