Read this on the train to work. If true, it's shocking (cue gags about making a kid support West Ham):

At 12 is this boy the youngest homeless person in Britain?
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
This grainy image could show Britain's youngest homeless person.

The mystery boy, believed to be 12, was captured on CCTV wearing a dark coat and carrying a roller-suitcase, school rucksack and a carrier bag with West Ham United logos. He was seen by the seafront in Brighton on Sunday night. 'We are concerned someone so young should be wandering alone here or anywhere else,' said Det Insp Lee Horner.

Sorry - web page doesn't have photo but you can see it on the online pdf-type edition. Blimey. We seem to be moving back to Victorian times

Hunt for missing 12-year-old boy launched by Brighton Police
3:14pm Monday 9th November 2009

A nationwide search to find a young boy last seen wandering the streets of Brighton has been launched.

Police are growing increasingly worried about the youngster who was walking round the city on his own.

The missing boy, thought to be aged about 12, was spotted by a passer by in Kings Road in the seafront, near the junction with West Street, shortly before 11pm on Sunday.

He was alone, and had a roller-suitcase, a school-type rucksack, and was carrying a carrier bag with West Ham United logos and colours.

Police searched the area but could not find him, and have one CCTV sighting taken from cameras at Burger King.

The boy had been seen in the nearby Burger King just before being spotted in the street and is believed to have been there the previous evening.

According to vital witnesses he talked about coming from a care home, but enquiries throughout Brighton & Hove have found no record of this.

The boy is described as having long dark hair, and wearing jeans, with white trainers with velcro straps.

Detective Inspector Lee Horner said; "This boy could come from anywhere in the country, even though he may still be in in the city.

“There is no information about his having any address or connections in the area, and although there is no evidence to suggest he has so far come to any harm, we are naturally concerned that someone so young should be wandering alone in this city or anywhere else."

Details of the sighting are being circulated to police forces nationwide in the hope that someone will recognise him.

Anyone who has seen this boy, or who thinks they may know him, is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting Serial 1586.

No-one likes a grass (can we have a smiley of a player waving an imaginary card for examples like this). Bushy and I scarcely bosom buddies but that's scarcely worth a ban.

To the main point, there are a lot of hypotheticals here - "thought to be about 12" and "believed to have been there". It's not exactly full of hard facts before we all start going on about Brighton being the new Mumbai.

Wrong question.

We should be asking what kind of care home loses a child and fails to report it to the authorities.

Or possibly what kind of authorities fail to handle such a report properly.

Fair point. It's just a shame kids have to end up at care homes due to incapable parents in the first place (although not always the case) it has a negative effect on the child and maybe this kid has run away from the miserable surroundings of a care home.

This is a bit O/T now but I moved to Balham in 1985 when it was dirt cheap (I think I paid about £10 a week for a room in a house that was half falling down). Balham tube station had more muggings than any other station and I'd have to walk from the station past the Bedford Hill hookers. I'd have laughed my head off is someone had told me that within 25 years, flats in the area would go for more than £300k
