Average/normal with few warm spells...

Going on what they predicted for this winter just gone ("worst in decades") I think it's safe to say we are going to have a scorcher this year!

Fill yer boots...

To be fair, their winter forecast was for below average and dry, which was spot on. It was only the papers who said "worst in decades".

And remember they predict for the whole country as well, not just the SE corner. Overall the winter in England was the worst since 1996. Compared to recent winters it was about 2 months longer as it started in early November and lasted until sometime late March.

They were pretty accurate as Hilton said. The media just like to stir things up a little.

November was very mild until the last week.
December was average
January was mild
February was average
March was cold

The met office said it would be a much colder winter than normal and as 7 of the last 10 winters have been in the top 10 warmes winters ever, they were hardly chancing it.

They fecked up in short. Most of the country has the lowest amounts of snow on record.

UK mean temperature
Prediction: Most likely colder than average
Outcome: Warmer than average

Southern UK mean temperature
Prediction: Most likely colder than average
Outcome: Colder than average

UK precipitation
Prediction: Most likely drier than average
Outcome: Drier than average

North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) for the winter season

4 out 5 is not bad considering seasonal forecasting is still essentially guesswork.
