Most likely he will stay for another year as he can go wherever he wants next year, perhaps Newell's Old Boys.

If Barcelona manage to get their shit together - Koeman doing a good job and the right president (Bartomeu is the main reason he wants to go) is elected in March, he could possibly stay.

Very difficult for him to move this summer. The Italian teams just can not afford him. City, Bayern and PSG would be the only options.

You forgot the OBVIOUS one.

But then he would probably get fed up sitting around on the bench waiting for Barndoor Bamford to pick up a knock.

quite easy for him to move on if he's fallen out with manager and president and lowers wage demands. you've named three likely desinations anyway. not sure Bayern want or need him though, so two that could easily make a deal.

I dont think he's fallen out with the manager (yet, it wouldnt be completely unexpected if it happened) but ten years of mismangement by Bartomeu & Rosell however has taken its toll.

Of course Bayern would want him, every club would, the opinion that he is overrated really dont exist outside of the UK where everyone is overrated unless they score against Stoke on a rainy tuesday. However Barca would likely demand at the very least £100m for him and thats where the issue is - at least if people are going to pretend that FFP is a thing.

The elephant in the room, is the competitiveness Messi has with Ronaldo to go down in the halls of fame as the best player of this generation. Whatever both may say, they're both determined to outdo the other in the Balon D'ior;s and trophies won.

Barcelona are simply not competitive and wont be for 1 to 2 seasons. Messi isn't going to hang around in the transition with a failing squad and watch Ronaldo winning more things imho.

I not so sure it will only be money motivated, he will want success and will go where he can guarantee that best.

I dont think it is the club he has issues with it is the massive tax deduction to his media rights by the Spanish tax system and court. He wont say this is the reason because he will get slated for it but it is pretty much the reason why Ronaldo left Madrid as well.

He just wants a huge contract and even more power at Barca. Where would he go? Nowhere. New contract in a week, guaranteed.

Probably not working in the favor of him staying, but I dont think its the main issue - if it was all about the money they would have found a way. But Messi leaving has been brewing for a very long time.

It can be traced back to when Sandro Rosell took over and fell out with Pep Guardiola multiple times, creating a rift between the Cruijffian/Catalan Barca roots (Laporta, Pep, Puyol, Xavi, Messi etc) and the new, Qatar-friendly guys such as Rosell & then vice president (and now president) Bartomeu. Pep got tired and left. Puyol quit his new job at the club in protest. Multiple youth coaches left or got fired. The decision not to extend Abidals contract despite promising to after his illness.

Its very infected and even if money plays a part, like it usually does, it really is much more intricate than that.

If he can go on a free, plenty of places where he could get a nice juicy signon fee. At his age he wont get a contract that will make up the loss in earnings from that court case. If he leaves Spain he gets that back.

He wants to win the Champions League. IMHO that's his only motivation. I'd go as far as to say he is more likely to join Juve than Man City.
