Swindon Town are ready to offer Chris McPhee a career lifeline if he fails to clinch a new deal at Albion.

The 23-year-old striker was one of nine Seagulls players out of contract at the end of the season.

An announcement on the future of the group, including Kerry Mayo, Gary Hart, Richard Carpenter and Guy Butters, was still awaited last night.

Swindon will move in to sign McPhee, who finished the season on loan at the County Ground, if the Seagulls deem him surplus to requirements.

McPhee, 23, failed to score in seven appearances for the Robins as they were relegated to League Two.

But he impressed with his work rate in attack and could suit boss Iffy Onuora's plans to field a physically powerful line-up in English football's fourth tier.

The Wiltshire club are awaiting developments at Withdean.

Onuora is notoriously reluctant to talk about possible signings but is enthusiastic when it comes to McPhee.

He said: "Chris I like, I like a lot. I'm probably going to speak to his agent about tying him down a bit more permanently, for next year certainly."

Swindon would not offer a fee for McPhee if he secured a new deal with Albion.

Former Albion and Nottingham Forest midfielder Steve Melton was last night released by Boston United.

Must have done something right especially seeing as he didnt score, manager sounds impressed. He will score goals at that level probably 10-15 a season, good luck chris

Sorry, who?...

He doesn't play for us anymore, we are not allowed to discuss him.

Wherever he ends up I hope he's a success. Always worked his arse off, just never quite made it with us.

is that because he's not good enough or because he's badly managed . . .there seems to be a common pattern emerging of players not being quite good enough until they go elsewhere.

Funny you should say that. The person from whom I heard about his release said he needed "re-coaching". Possibly it was a case of sour grapes, blaming poor management, or there's something more to it. Time will tell I s'pose.

Sour grapes against the management team? Was it Bens Grandad?

Who exactly? All i can think of is Knight, who's scoring goals at the same level he did for us and er that's it.

Mcphee's hardly proved himself has he. Running around enthusiastically without scoring goals - well he did that for us.

If you can quote even one example of that I would be amazed. You are just another one in total denial about the fact that we can only afford to give McGhee a lot of hardworking journeymen and possible young hopefuls to work with.

Of course he will not find more examples. What will happen is that all the anti McGhee people on this site will accuse you of blindly following the manager and will not answer the question.

McGhee is staying for next season. The sooner people accept that, the sooner they will be able to look forward to next season.
