Gerrard had a good World Cup, but Lampard was awful, as was Beckham.

The main factor in Lampard's awfulness (in my opinion) was the lack of freedom allowed to him by the midfield formation.

Are you honestly telling me that a guy who scores 20 goals a season from midfield every season, came 3rd in the European player of the year awards, and is the first name on the team sheet of a team that wins every single week, isn't good enough to play well against the likes of Trinidad or Ecuador?

Or maybe, just maybe, the system played at Chelsea in the last few years suits him better than England's system of "lets play four attacking midfielders and hope it works out okay"?

The attacking system did not make Lamp put shot after shot 5 yards over the opposition's goal.

Lampard had 20 odd shots on goal.
So Sven's system got our main goal threat on average four chances a game, that's pretty good. If three had gone in the world cup would have been completely different.
ANd what exactly did Gerrard do to have a good world cup?

I thought having a good team would be the main thing?
But no, as long as we've not a got a foreigner in charge as that's what's important

Yawn yawn, same old counter-argument to any criticism of Sven. "Just because he's FOREIGN"

Fact is, we've got more chance of having a good team now that that buffoon isn't in charge any more. Its got nothing to do with what country he was from. He was just SHIT.

I've got nothing against having a "foriegner" in charge (I wanted Hiddink to replace Sven), but do you really think Sven picked the right team/tactics/squad?

Of course it's not Sven's fault Lampard was woefully out of form, but who kept playing him? I think the blame for our exit definitely lies at Sven's door. Would Rooney have been sent off if he hadn't been playing up front on his own? IT was obvious during the Portugal game that the formation wasn't working, Rooney was isolated and he inevitably became frustrated. Anyone could see it coming, he should've brought on Crouch, he had the oppurtunity on a plate when Beckham got injured but he stuck with the formation and it proved to be a big mistake. Why didn't he bring on Crouch, we still had Walcott as backup, Sven took him and then showed NO faith in him, even as a back up. Our World Cup was a SHAMBLES.

Beckham should play!
But in place of who ?
Do you do a Sven, play him on the right, move Gerrard back into the centre with Fat Frank, and dispense with the holding midfielder ?

Do you play him in the middle AS the holding midfielder ?

Do you play him at (gulp) rightback ?

WHERE do we accomodate him ?

I thought we had a poor World Cup and i'd agree that a lot of the fault was Sven's. However i don't think the formation was the reason for the non-performances of Lampard, Rooney and Gerrard or a general inability to keep the ball (hargreaves and to an extent Beckham excepted)

I think his confidence (in an England shirt) was low because of two years of playing in a midfield system for England that doesn't suit him (or Gerrard). For Chelsea, he would have buried those chances without thinking. As he has been doing week in, week out in the Premiership for three years now.

There has to be a reason why Gerrard and Lampard play worse for England than they do for their club sides and that is quite simple - the system. A system that for four years was built around Beckham, at the expense of everyone else.

We have now have a system (Gerrard on the right and Lampard in the centre) that plays to our best players' strengths, (i.e. playing where they play for their club side) so I don't understand the logic in changing that.

At the end of the Beckham has another euros left in him, and even after that he could possibily be in the squad for the next world cup. One of the greatest Midfielders this country has produced.

Sorry but Beckham is past it. No pace and everyone in the world has worked out the only things he can do now are hit long balls in to the box and score 1 in 50 free kicks.

He was gash in Germany and fully deserves to be dropped.

Pennant may not be as complete a player as Beckham was in his prime but these days he offers pace and a direct threat. He was great for Liverpool last night against the Turks and set up the 2nd goal with a cross Beckham would have been proud of when he was good.

In the absence of Joe Cole then Downing plays left. He's similar to Beckham in that he has no pace and just whips balls in. Playing Downing on the left and Beckham on the right would make us more obvious and 1 dimensional than Watford.

So there.
What the hell are you on about? Downing is a quality young winger and undoubtely has pace

It's only Croatia and Macedonia we're playing innit? Easily winnable as long as we field a strong side in both games. The thought of Pennant playing worries me somewhat though so why not bring Becks back for just TWO more games to get a calm head in there, some experience and the best set pieces on the planet?

Anyway all this is irrelevant as the midfield will blatantly be:

Gerrard - Lampard - Carrick - Downing.
