Mark McGhee's point of view following his side's surprise 1-0 victory at the Boleyn...

Mark McGhee - Brighton & Hove Albion

(On seeing the numbers attending the press conference) - you look like our crowd!

More than we could have hoped for? You're kidding! (Wry grin). We've had some bad results lately - we've lost 2-1, 3-1, and we felt that was very hard on us. We may have deserved to lose but not by those scores and it looked worse than it actually was.

We felt that we could come here and make it difficult. We went to Derby & Sunderland thinking we could win the game. We approached today differently - we came here thinking that we're not gonna lose the game.

We got away with it today. There were a couple of close shaves. I felt that when we did get the ball forward we needed to be more patient and slow the game down a bit.

What can you say about Claridge. I worked with Steve at Millwall & at Wolves. He was fantastic then. He's one of the fittest players I've worked with either as a player or a manager. He has an unbelieveable level of fitness so I had no fears that he could do it even after being away from this level for 18 months. He was probably the difference between us losing and winning. The way he kept the ball was superb.

Leon Knight? Yes he was dropped. I've no idea how he felt about that. I don't know how I'm supposed to know that. Adam Virgo's suspended next week so he'll be playing next week.

I thought Virgs did a clumsy challenge - not a bad challenge. The lad (Mullins) wasn't hurt and I thought he overreacted. When everybody gets involved it's inevitable that the ref's gonna send someone off. You try to tell them when two players come together to leave them - the ref will normally just book them - but when they all get involved in a fracas like that the ref will send two off. I think he had no choice - they were pulling eachother's jerseys, pushing eachother's faces. It was ugly.

We could lose next week at Burnley. I didn't learn anything today that I didn't already know. Possibly how to play in a more pragmatic manner. We may have to do that even at home. Our supporters may have to be more tolerant. If it's gonna get us results that's the most important thing.

but you just know we won't be tolerant for longer than 5 mins next week, unless we go a goal up :(

Bugger knows what's going on with Knight - how must he feel to be getting back to his best then dropped for Claridge? What exactly has he been dropped for? He's been playing better than Virgo, yet McGhee's vendetta works against him again.

Much as I approve of McGhee, his stupid dislike of one of our best players, no matter what he does on the pitch, is only going to hurt us. I can't understand his claim that Claridge was the difference either - we would have lost nothing by bringing Knight on.

You just can't please some people. Sorry, but I thought we won yesterday.

I thought someone would say that. The players chosen did well, but I don't think there's any reason why concerning questions shouldn't be asked. There's always a scapegoat or two ...

But the Toad's got a point. I think Mghee's great but he obviously dislikes Leon and I think that does colour his judgement at times. Leon is frustrating at times and judging by the difficulties he had at Sheffield Wednesday he's not an easy player to work with. I can understand how you could take a dislike to him but he's got the talent and ability to be a very good striker, enough maybe to count to ten and let him strop out now and again without letting that effect your team selection. Leon's been working alone as an out and out striker for most of his time here. Even playing Virgo up front with him hasn't helped him that much 'cos Virgo's got a defenders footballing brain so they aren't on the same wavelength much of the time. Yesterday we had an opportunity to play him with Claridge for at least some of the match. I understand why Currie was put on at that point but it must be frustrating for Leon and perhaps Mcghee should be a little bit more sensitive to that. If it's reverse psychology it's not working, Knight's not that kind of player. I'm looking forward to seeing him play alongside Claridge, it could be the making of him, but to be getting back in the side because "Virgo's suspended" isn't likely to make him feel special is it?

RT has McGhee ever said he disliked Leon Knight?

Horses for courses. Leon will get picked again (and not just because Virgo is suspended)

Knight and Claridge would be my first-choice pairing... Virgo is a defender, and should be playing at cb... that said, what a fantastic result!... :) :)

Maybe McGhee will buy Leon a box of Milk Tray and a little bunny with a heart on it? :D

Total over-drama here. This a fairly normal situation in professional football - we now have (at last :clap2: :clap2: :clap2: ) is 3 strikers chasing 2 places. This should be a cause of celebration - squad depth at long last.

Virgo will always be first on the team sheet because of played 13, won 6, drawn 3, lost 4. Because of his work rate, his goals and because when he plays, we defend from the front - see MM's constant praise of him at every opportunity.

Then that leaves Claridge and Leon fighting for the other place. Claridge has the edge because he will give you 100% on 100% of times, whereas with Leon it's 100% 90% of the time.

There is no rift between the manager and Leon, just a manager trying to make Leon a better player - and every time Leon gets left out by McGhee, he does come back a better player. That shows Leon does listen and learn. He will do so again.

There is no comfort zone now for Leon - he has 3 or 4 games now to show McGhee that he is undroppable, otherwise Virgs comes straight back in.

This competition for places is fantastic news for us fans :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

Scapegoats are used to heap blame when things go wrong.

You don't need them when things go right.

My thoughts entirely Irish  Leon is realising that he can't just turn up and get picked, he has to pull his socks up. And he will be a better player for it. I worry about Mahetta, though. How many's he played since he got here? Is he really that poor?
