It does come across as patronising though - and shows his ignorance of the way we operate. Of course we're buying him in the hope that he moves on to a 'big' club - for two or three times the price we paid for him!

He’s a contrarian pundit - so is always looking to say something he knows will provoke a reaction from certain sections of fans.
However, in this case, all he’s really saying is he thinks O’Riley is already good enough to go straight to an elite club, not that Celtic to Brighton isn’t a clear upwards career move for him.
It sounded like another installment in the long running (tedious) argument between Sutton and Savage about whether Celtic (in particular) and Rangers are 'big' clubs or not, in comparison with all the English clubs who so easily raid the sweaty clubs for players and managers.
The apotheosis was when Neil Lennon left as Celtic manager to take on the might of Bolton, triggering Savage to declare that Bolton are 'bigger' than Celtic.
(In other words the latest bit of Sutton tomfoolery has nothing to do with little ol' Brighton).

Sutton is and really always has been one of those passive aggressive pundits. Balanced views are not in his journalistic repertoire. He's basically biased and not afraid to say something for 'stir up' effect. I don't like him and his predictions on a week by week basis really aren't that accurate ir reasoned. But then the BBC employ the likes of him and Linekar which shows the bar is set pretty damn low.

Not a fan of Sutton but he is bigging up O’Riley on Sky Sports. Asked how Celtic replace O’Riley he said,”They can’t!” Typical of him I suppose but still nice to hear.

I disagree about Sutton and his style. He has two modes. If he’s on a wind-up he makes it very obvious, eg when swapping schoolboy-level bantz with the appalling Savage on 606. For his more mainstream media work as co-commentator or studio pundit he’s quite insightful and certainly offers a balanced view. He knows what buttons to press in different circumstances but he definitely has a serious and interesting side if you catch him on the right gig.
Yes, that's what he said.

On possible incomings, Rodgers commented: "Ideal scenario is we wouldn't be having to do so much business in the last week, however there's still that time for us to do something and improve the squad.
"Hopefully over the course of this next week, we can get some players in that can give us strength in depth in the squad because after September we've got a really long season."

Jeez, Talk about some bitter Celtic fans, Even though they play in a conference league to qualify for europe. They really don't see how crap they are in europe. last actual win was 2021?. A European title win, 1960's?. FFS. What is it with fans living in an era long long gone.

To some extent they're living in the past but I can understand their frustration. Imagine if your club was a European regular, you'd won countless trophies and still had crowds approaching 60,000 every home match but your best players were poached by relative minnows from a neighbouring country. They're obviously a huge club with a massive fan base but restricted by their league. It must be annoying.

I agree to a certain extent but the SPL is championship level to bottom Premier league at best. Celtic wouldn’t walk the league every year down here. Testing himself will only serve him better in the long run and he knows we won’t stand in his way if bigger clubs come calling.

I understand, But you if you base the club size on largely revenue based.
Brighton would be a far bigger Club. Not Minnows I.e 60,000 Celtic fans still won't bring in anywhere near the revenue Brighton get each week.
Our revenue is huge because we are lucky enough to be based in England.
