[Albion] Mats Wieffer SINGS on 5 year contract

He was easily outjumped a few times by Munetsi - but not sure if that was Weiffer not jumping, or Minetsu ridiculously good. But otherwise, that's the most solid we've seen him - no worrying moments at all really, and played it out nicely.

If it’s the occasions I’m thinking of (the flick on towards the end and the back post header) on both occasions Wieffer was under the ball and the other lad had a run and jump on him. The defending from the back post was solid, never going to win the header at that angle but backed in and made it difficult with little chance of scoring

He has a very catchy chant which I think got the away support really energised today. Admittedly not the most complicated chant for a not the most complicated player.
A group of lads were starting it regularly behind me today in my section on the left side and I overheard this exchange:
Chant leader: WIEFFER AGAIN (and so on for a fair while)
Chant leader’s mate: Hold on, you told me he was shit
Chant leader: He is shit. WIEFFER AGAIN, WIEFFER AGAIN. . .

He probably got confused which one he was meant to be marking.
Begrudging “solid”. Whilst Cantor and Aspinall thought he was MOTM brilliant. Nullifying a player tearing the rest of the PL apart, plus his exemplary passing game.

Mats fairly got some stick for his early season performances, but equally he should be getting plaudits for the huge improvement there has been in his game, especially in an unfamiliar position.
He deserves to finish the season there and next season we'll see whether that's the best option for him or centre mid. Those positions are tough to get time in though. I just wonder if the transformation to a full back will be permanent.

He was only out-jumped in situations that were not threatening. I couldn't work out if he was lucky, or knew what he was doing.
I thought he and Lamptey controlled their left side attacking options very well.

I doubt he's a permanent right back, he's too good a centre midfielder.
I guess he's being used at right back, firstly because he's shown he can play there and we were a bit short in that position, but mainly to gain some confidence in a part of the field where his mistakes are less pivotal. (Whilst he gets to grips with the pace and intensity of the Premier League).
Much like a young Steven Gerrard did and many other novice Premier League midfield players when they first play at this level.
I think he's the backfill for Baleba, succession planning, for when the inevitable bids start rolling in.

He replaced Baleba twice at home, early in the season & it was absolutely seamless. People that talk about him only just showing promise must have very short memories

Not read the rest of today's contributions but Wieffer was my MoTM today.
He’s looking great.
I still find it extraordinary how a couple of early season mistakes made people completely write him off just a few weeks ago. I think it's been fairly obvious there's a really good player there since day one. Have we still not learned the lesson that players moving to the PL take different lengths of time to adapt, especially with injuries?

lol no one is writing him off, he’s just incredibly average, technique not that great for this level, yellow cards in abundance so a 10-man risk, but it’s good we are getting some return on our big fee paid with all the injuries at rightback. He’s no where near as good as Baleba, god help us if that’s the succession plan
