It appears that this phrase has now passed into the vernacular of NSC, and I would just like to spend a few minutes paying tribute to the man who began it all, and coined the phrase.
With so many "Marvellous Scenes" so recently behind us, and hopefully immediately ahead of us, what better time to pay tribute to Andy Boyd, aka Boyda, a regular non-contributing reader of NSC, and Albion Season Ticket Holder.
Twas back in the days before I had ready access to the net for hours on end during working hours. Boyda had the cushiest of jobs that also included having Sky Sports on in the office. He would keep me completely up to date on all breaking stories and latest scores of any sport going on during the working day.
It was the winter of 2000-01, with England touring Pakistan followed by Sri Lanka. The third test in Pakistan (Karachi, I think) was the scene of a magnificent win with Hussain and Thorpe seeing us through on the last day, in virtual darkness. Boyda's updates were becoming ever more regular as victory approach. When Thorpe hit the winning runs and the players all broke into huge celebrations, Boyda summed it up perfectly by simply describing it as "Marvellous Scenes."
From there the phrase was born. Mainly used between us on the email, but as more of our friends gained access to email at work it began to spread. Most significantly to Easy10, who then passed it onto NSC, and from there it just became part of the common language.
A superbly evokative phrase that is simple, yet brings to mind so many tremendous sporting moments over the passed 3.5 years.
So whatever next? When I told Boyda about my journey home from Swindon with a mate hanging out of my passenger window being sick all down the side of my car, followed by my attempts at home later that night to clean it up, he said simply "Appalling Scenes." Remember, you heard it here first.
