I read this yesterday. Really powerful read and good to hear that he has his life under control at the moment.

I've read the book that is mentioned in the piece called "Living on the Volcano". The chapter on Ling is fascinating to read, as is the book generally.

It's World Mental Health week so it's important that there are threads like this. Depression is such a horrible thing; it has no logic - doesn't matter if you're a millionaire or a famous person with millions of fans. The worst thing though is to bottle it all up so there's no shame in talking to a specialist doctor or even a good cry to let all the pain out to a close friend or family member. Anti-depressants can work but only if they're the RIGHT ones. Don't be fobbed off by a doctor if they have an attitude of "pull yourself together". There's always light at the end of the tunnel.

Everybody deserves to feel happy.

Love him or hate him, but Alex Ferguson was always one manager who did things like that. I'm pretty sure he was one of the few Premier league managers who wrote a letter supporting Falmer, and every time there's a story like this he's always one of the managers who rings or writes to offer help.

Sometimes folk forget that money is not normally the primary motivation to succeed in football. Players just want to...play. When a career is over it can feel like a life had ended. They live and breath the game. A big old house and healthy bank balance is no compensation. I bet many would trade most of that for another five years.

I know little of his management but it sounds like he is no mug. Best wishes to him and I hope the game affords him a splendid future in coaching and managing.
