Mark McGhee - what do you think?

Some fans on here seem to thnk we have some divine right to be walking this league.

Look at our squad. How many of our players would you say are outstanding at this level?

Let me tell you what I think. Leon and Yeates. Everyone else is just OK, some good games, some bad games.

Next point, we are getting about 6,000 to 6,500 fans at home games. Take off the costs of running the club, Ecovert, etc that won't leave much in the pot for players.

Prior to McGhee taking over, even though we were top when Coppell left, we weren't playing well. He's got a different style and it will take time for this to gel with the team.

So, McGhee is crap? What would you lot do within the limitations that he's working with.

I think he will turn out to be a very good manager for us, and will be here for a few seasons.

I'm happy so far with what he is trying to do. We certainly seem to be more controlled in our build up play now, and Kerry is once again settling under a new manager (he seems to be the most affected by change every time).

Whilst we're not setting the world alight, the football is now much better than it was under Coppell at the start of this season. With Blackwell in defence rather than Butters, I think we would be much better, though. I hope his recovery is going well, as we need him.

A club like us obviously cannot hold on to the best managers in the world forever, so I'm grateful that we have someone like McGhee at the helm. The best manager available to us.

The only thing that disappoints me at the moment it our defence, or lack of it.

We are scoring plenty of goals - but leaking way too many at the other end, and many of them soft (e.g. our defending from corners is very weak).

I really hope Blackwell gets fit soon - and Adam El Abd gets an extended run. The Ginger Prince remains an enigma - I still can't bring myself to say he should be replaced, though.

I have every confidence in Mark McGhee - I think we are playing decent football, however - sound defence is the key to gaining points!!

Magoo talks the talk really well. He sounds superb, telling us how he wants to play, what we did wrong etc, doesn't make excuses. I just hope we start to see a bit more of it translating to results.

We've been spoilt recently with three excellent previous managers and it was always going to take time (not 8 matches) for McGhee to mould a side to his way of playing, whatever that might be

Until Falmer is up and running, we are just treading water as a club, and I expect a major clearout in the summer for a Plymouth style assault on the Division 2 championship next season

Realistically, if we do go up via the playoffs we are going to get hammered most games next season, and that won't be much fun having to watch that (although away games at places like Palace, West Ham, Forest and maybe Spurs will compensate a little!)

I am at a loss as to what people expect. There are signs that the team are begining to play Mc Ghee's way in that they have stopped hoofing the ball and play it around on the ground quite effectively. I believe that we are still suffering by not having adequately replaced Simon Morgan and as result Danny Cullip is not as effective as he was. Some of the players are obviously getting past their best before date but I believe that MM will bring out the last little bit in them and that we shall make the play-offs. Whether or not Dick Knight and the board can afford for us to get promoted remains to be seen. I believe the general feeling is that the answer to that is No not this season but hopefully next.

Thats funny I seem to remember the same things being said every season whilst Billy Lane was manager as it helped sell season tickets. Two months and the renewals will be out!

The sensible plan woud be

season 2003/2004 - Div 2
season 2004/2005 - Div 2
season 2005/2006 - Div 2 championship winners
season 2006/2007 - first season at Falmer, Div 1 challenging for the play offs.

The jury is still out on McGhee as we have been inconsistent since he took over.

However, I have to admit I'm a little disappointed. We have no money for new players, and we've used up our loan quota more or less, so what we're looking for here is a manager who can get the best out of the players we've already got at the club.

Now we know exactly how good this team is - they've won Div 2 and picked up some notable scalps in Div 1 - and we've been in the top 5 places for the entire first half of the season. Therefore, the team should be motivated and up for promotion but McGhee has only got half the squad playing. These are the players doing well under McGhee:

Cullip, Butters, Yeates, Carpenter, Knight, McPhee, Piercy

And these are the ones who are not:

Roberts, Watson, Mayo, Hart, Jones.

The biggest challenge for McGhee is to get Gary Hart back to his best. I believe that if he can do this we will be in business.

We just can't carry 4 or 5 name players all playing below their best week in, week out, and if McGhee is any good he will get three or more to raise their game.

I am not convinced about McGee as yet, and am waiting to be pleasantly surprised.

It was quite interesting at Swindon, who being honest should have won against us at a canter in the second half ( 1 goal flattered us) , in the first half, the ball was played on the ground to Mcphee and Piercy, who I thought played extremely well together. In the second half when Knighty came on, we reverted to teh long old fashioned hoof up the field to a small guy. Why?

I am convinced our problems are in midfield. Yeates is doing teh Junior Lewis role, which gives chippy space, but both flanks are awful.

Garry hart is a shadow of the player he was and does not look like he will ever score again and Nathan Jones is all flashy tricks with no substance. That is the area we could do with looking at.

My concern at the moment is what happens when Yeates goes back to Spurs and who will look to fill his place? Hammond?

Too early to judge yet, so far he's done ok the team are playing some nice football but results are inconsistent.

Give it a couple of months and we will settle down....still think we will finish in a play off place.

Well too early to judge. The only really noticeable difference is that the football is better to watch than under either Coppell or Taylor. If you cast your mind back a few years to when Micky Adams first arrived he didn't exactly set us on fire did he? I can remember games well into our time at Withdean when more than just a minority wanted Adams out and look what he achieved when given time. McGhee will only start to make the team his by the end of the season.

My one critisicm of MM is that he hasnt taken Leon Knight to task about the ridculous bookings he is getting for taking his shirt off when he scores. EVERYBODY knows that most refs book a player for that and it is stupid, pointless and costly to the team and fans when it accumulates to a ban. I believe that MM should state that any player doing it will be fined at least a weeks wages as it achieves nothing. Another point why do supporters clapand cheer a play who has been sent off and let his team mates and supporters down by losing a player.
