Vaughan loath to lose Rush to Wales
Sep 13 2004

Exclusive By Neil Turner, Daily Post

IAN RUSH has been tipped for a quick step up in management if Mark Hughes takes the Blackburn Rovers job.

Wales manager Hughes is the favourite to replace Graeme Souness, who officially begins his reign as successor to Sir Bobby Robson at Newcastle today.

Several reports have claimed the Chester City manager, who continued his 100pc start in his Deva Stadium role with Saturday's 2-1 victory at Scunthorpe, is the FA of Wales's number one target should Hughes move on.

Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan last night said the club had received no contact from the Welsh FA and is keen to keep the former Liverpool striker at the Deva. But he also admitted he would not stand in his manager's way.

He said: "It's flattering to have our manager linked with the top position of a national side. We haven't heard anything from the FA of Wales but if we were approached officially, obviously we would talk to them.

"We would not stand in Ian's way if he was wanted for a bigger job, but we certainly don't want to lose him. We are extremely impressed with the job he has done in the short time he has been with us."

Vaughan added: "A few people questioned what I consider to be a bold decision to appoint Ian as manager of Chester City but the results and events of the past couple of weeks have vindicated my choice.

"We want to hold on to Ian and his assistant Mark Aislewood. In the event of an approach being made by FAW, then we would possibly discuss a part-time position with the Welsh national side."

I think Hughes has down well with Wales, up until the last couple of results.

I thought though Blackburn might have chosen someone with a little more experience in club management.

Blackburn say Mark Hughes has become manager "with immediate effect".

Bit optimistic, shurely?

You really think so? As far as I'm concerned Blackburn are welcome to Hughes, and I know that goes for many other Welsh fans too. Tactically, he hasn't got a clue.

Wales were a joke when Hughes took over, and in fairness to him he did steady the ship. However, his record in competitive games is actually piss-poor when you examine it closely.

The Welsh team has played 22 qualifying matches under Hughes. We have won 5, drawn 10 and lost 7.

The 5 wins consist of home victories over Belarus, Italy and Azerbaijan, and away wins in Finland and Azerbaijan. Obviously the Italy and Finland victories were notable, but they counted for nothing at the end of the day.

Wales made a brilliant start to their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign with four wins on the trot, but Hughes has effectively been dining out on those results ever since.

Since then, we have played eight qualifying games and we haven't won a single one. Our results sequence (Wales scores first) reads: 0-1, 0-4, 1-1, 2-3, 0-0, 0-1, 1-1, 2-2. Not good, is it?

Many Wales fans feel that Hughes blew our last qualifying campaign with his negative tactics away in Serbia and at home against Finland, and his team selection in the home play-off against Russia was an absolute joke. He selected a side that played to Russia's strengths. It was ridiculous. And now the start to our latest World Cup qualifying campaign has been abysmal with draws away in Azerbaijan and at home against N Ireland.

Of course, we are weak nation in footballing terms and our squad is limited in both numbers and quality. However, the players we do have should be getting much better results than they have been doing of late, and the manager must take plenty of blame for that as his team selections and substitutions have often been baffling.

Blackburn can have Hughes, and good luck to them. They'll need it.
