Forty grand, you say? I wonder where that might land him if convicted.

(1) A REDHILL truck driver has been jailed for failing to pay more than £40,000 in tax. Nicholas West, 57, of Heston Road, was a self-employed truck driver and weighbridge operator who was paid cash in hand. West appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to tax evasion. The court heard West had neglected to pay £41,387.61 in tax between January 3, 2002 and April 6, 2007

(2) A Bracknell businessman has been jailed after for the taxman out of £360,000. Martin Trevor Wade, 56, of Arkwright Drive, Popeswood, was prosecuted at Reading Crown Court for Cheating the Revenue, Contrary to Common Law. He pleaded guilty on the first day of the trial in April, and on Monday was sentenced to two years and nine months in jail

(3) Then there was Boston United where, after taking the Lincolnshire club into the Football League in 2002, Steve Evans was eventually given a one-year suspended jail sentence for tax evasion after running a wages and bonus scam with his chairman. As for Boston and the Inland Revenue - prior to his suspended sentence he was fined £8,000 and banned for 20 months. Star striker Ken Charlery told Evans' trial he was given one contract for £620 a week plus a £16,000 signing-on fee, paid in bundles of cash. The Football League and Inland Revenue were shown another for £120 a week and failing to mention any signing-on fee.

It's just a shame that with a face like his Harry won't be anyone's bitch in the showers in prison, unlike his pretty boy son Jamie.

It is remarkable that Redknapp would risk a jail sentence or losing his job over a paltry sum of £40k.

I dare say that's just the tip of the iceberg, but the only bit they can make stick.

Abort, retry, fail
Quite. That is what I was inferring. I assume, when someone is investigated, their accountants are given a grilling? I bet it is very easy to evade tax, certainly with money flying about left, right and centre in the footballing world.

On the other hand. I've mentioned before the employer I had who didn't pass on the PAYE deductions of his staff over a 10 year period, a sum of about £200,000 according to the accountant and didn't get prosecuted - and carried on the same scam at a different company.

It's really a question of which strings you can pull ... and you can bet 'Arry has some good contacts. I'll be really surprised if he's jailed.

what is truly remarkable is that they have only CAUGHT him fiddling £40K.

I am sure that risking his career would have involved a great deal more than that

I think a court of law requires rather more in the way of proof ... sadly, in this case

He will tell you that he moved there in the early 1980s when he was Bournemouth manager. Maybe it wasn't so expensive or exclusive then? I have no idea, by the way, it was just a thought.

That said, there has been so much speculation surrounding Redknapp for YEARS, whispers (never proven, of course, m'lud) about bungs, payments on the sly, cheeky little fees here and there, tax scams and so on. It's odd how they always keep happening to him isn't it?
