I agree, to me this just seems to make sound business sense! Money is hard to come by in footy these days and if you can exploit an opening in the market somewhere then I it should be grabbed with both hands. This club really needs to wake up to the revenue being lost through poor marketing!

lets get a couple of pin up South Koreans on board and watch our profits soar! The money can then be spent on 'proper' players.

sorted!

Cos in my sappy, naive kind of way, I like to think that football clubs generally sign players cos they think they can bring something to the team and strengthen the squad. The way football is going now, clubs like Man U are just signing players as token gestures to flog more shirts abroad. In this case, its clearly nothing to do with Dong's skill, ability or potential. To put it crudely, they've signed him cos he's a chink, and they want to sell more shirts in China.

If you're happy with that then fine, but to me its degrading, and is not what football should be about.

I totally agree, but you don't make money by sticking to good morals. Unfortunately todays game is all about the money. Players are demanding high wages and the game is suffering. Never in the game's history have so many clubs been so close to going under. Now if it is possible to make a spot of cash by getting in a couple of 'chinks' then so be it. I for one would rather see Brighton competing with bad moral then out of buisiness with good morals.

Sad but true.

he is a good player as is li tie jsut because he is a "chink" does not mean he cant play football

Thats not what I'm saying - he may well be a good player, but thats NOT why Man U have signed him. Look at Fergies quote:

"we have to be careful how much we grow and how we cope with that growth staff-wise. Can we cope with another couple of million wanting to support us?"

Does that not pretty much sum up for you exactly why this kiddy has been signed ? Fergie may have said it as a throwaway quip, but manys a true word is spoken in jest.

Err no not really! If we went with Bellotti's morals we wouldn't be competing and we'd still have bad morals. But I guess that's what it takes to be an MP!

It's no different to a bad Chairman coming in with loads of cash! Let's face it most Chelsea fans don't love Roman, they love his money! No difference really.

I'm not saying I agree with it, I'm saying that you need to sink to the same level as the others in order to compete. It's a sad fact of life.

And don't bring Wimbledon into this at that is totally different.

Lets sign a Chinese or Japanese player! Then it will be millions of replica (and fake) Albion shirts in Asia!:clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

You're suggesting that you need to cast aside morals to have success in business yet you need look no further than the club you support to see that that is utter nonsense.....

Under a Chairman with good morals the Albion have: had success both on (two championships) and off (financially sound, moved back to Brighton and progress made on a new ground) the pitch and...

Under a Chairman with bad morals: we were bottom of the third division on the brink of liquidation, with nowhere to play in the long term future and no hope whatsoever.

They pinched the idea from Arsene Wenger who brought in Inamoto from Japan on the same principle. Inamoto is the most popular player in Japan and China.

But don't worry it didn't swell the coffers at Arsenal and players from that part of the world struggle to adapt to english football that's why they didn't renew his loan spell and he moved on to Fulham, where he's hardly brought in hardcash for the club.

A good many Japs turn up to watch 'Fulham' at Loftus road. You can bet that he is easily recouping his wages on shirt sales. Both Japan and Korea showed in the World cup that they are no muppets and an international would easily be able to do a job for us both on and off the pitch.

And btw getting in a star Asian player on the grounds of making money for the club is totally different to Bellotti! In fact I can't think of anything that Bellotti did that was done to make the CLUB money and not himself and Archer!

A lot of Brighton fans seem to think that we are (or at least should be) squeeky clean! And that somehow we are above other clubs purely because of our history and what we had to go through! We are not. We are another club in the football league trying to make ends meet and if possible make a move up it a bit!

Do you think Real Madrid bought Beckham purely for his playing ability or his ability to sell shirts? I think it's time to wake up and smell the coffee and take off your rose tinted glasses. Football is 90% about what goes on off the pitch these days rather than what happens on it! Just ask , Wimbledon, Leicester or Leeds fans!

Our club may have good morals but it has a crap marketing department. Clubs cannot survive on gate receipts alone and have to strenghten the merchandise sales by whatever methods possible. We have made so many blunders on the marketing side (late shirts, centenary video etc) that you wonder how we have a chairman who is in the pr business.

All clubs need to look at the way manchester united work and replicate it in some small way as, whatever your opinion, the model works and the future will be about survival for a lot of teams. Personally i think a lot of this is hating man u for hatings sake and whatever they do will be considered exploitation. I hate them as much as the next man but mainly because of the way they handle themselves on the pitch.

If DK did the same thing he'd be a genius to most on here.

Correct! I hate Man U for getting 10mins injury time if they are losing at home (the laws changed for this)

I hate Man U for introducing too many foreign players into the game thus effecting our own national side. It was Man U that got the rule changed that said you were only allowed 2 foriegn players in your side when playing in Europe (the laws changed for this).

I hate Man U for taking the oldest cup in football into disrepute by electing not to play in it, when they are the richest club in the world and could easily have, at least, fielded some squad players.

However, the fact is that unless other clubs learn from Man U and their marketing machine, then we will have the Scottish Prem on our hands and NO ONE wants that! Even the Scottish!
