Brain dead MUG SHEEP
Yet more rampant commercialism from Man Utd Plc. Get this (from The Times).
MANCHESTER UNITED are close to completing the acquisition of Dong Fangzhuo, the Dalian Shide forward, in a deal that Sir Alex Ferguson believes will strengthen the club’s dominant position in the football market in China. United calculate that they already have about 20 million supporters in Asia, up to half of them in China, but Ferguson expects those figures to soar once Dong, an 18-year-old centre forward, completes his move to Old Trafford. The United manager announced yesterday that “a Chinese boy” would be joining the club shortly.
“We’re signing a Chinese boy, hopefully in the next few weeks. But we have to be careful how much we grow and how we cope with that growth staff-wise. Can we cope with another couple of million wanting to support us?”
Everton and Manchester City have enjoyed considerable commercial success in China since signing Li Tie and Sun Jihai, two of the nation’s most popular players, respectively. United have looked into the possibility of signing a Chinese player for some time, although sources insist that Dong made a positive impression while on trial and that the deal would not be based purely on commercial interests. (yeah, right).
I think its so sad that a young player, a young lad with aspirations of being a professional footballer, can be so blatantly used as a token of commercialism merely to sell more shirts and raise a football clubs profile in Asia. Fergusons sickeningly flippant comment of "can we cope with another couple of million wanting to support us ?" gives a crystal clear insight into the sole purpose of this signing. This kid will maybe make the reserves, and at the very best, can expect no more than the odd run-out in the early stages of the Carling Cup, or on one of their "Global Marketing" pre-season tours. He's there to flog shirts, nothing more. Man U really do make me sick.
