Man U make me SICK

Yet more rampant commercialism from Man Utd Plc. Get this (from The Times).

MANCHESTER UNITED are close to completing the acquisition of Dong Fangzhuo, the Dalian Shide forward, in a deal that Sir Alex Ferguson believes will strengthen the club’s dominant position in the football market in China. United calculate that they already have about 20 million supporters in Asia, up to half of them in China, but Ferguson expects those figures to soar once Dong, an 18-year-old centre forward, completes his move to Old Trafford. The United manager announced yesterday that “a Chinese boy” would be joining the club shortly.

“We’re signing a Chinese boy, hopefully in the next few weeks. But we have to be careful how much we grow and how we cope with that growth staff-wise. Can we cope with another couple of million wanting to support us?”

Everton and Manchester City have enjoyed considerable commercial success in China since signing Li Tie and Sun Jihai, two of the nation’s most popular players, respectively. United have looked into the possibility of signing a Chinese player for some time, although sources insist that Dong made a positive impression while on trial and that the deal would not be based purely on commercial interests. (yeah, right).

I think its so sad that a young player, a young lad with aspirations of being a professional footballer, can be so blatantly used as a token of commercialism merely to sell more shirts and raise a football clubs profile in Asia. Fergusons sickeningly flippant comment of "can we cope with another couple of million wanting to support us ?" gives a crystal clear insight into the sole purpose of this signing. This kid will maybe make the reserves, and at the very best, can expect no more than the odd run-out in the early stages of the Carling Cup, or on one of their "Global Marketing" pre-season tours. He's there to flog shirts, nothing more. Man U really do make me sick.

:nono: poor lad , he will never see the reserves sub bench , he'll be pulled out the wilderness only to sign books/shirts and then be shunned by every associated with manchester united , i really do feel sorry for him!

Sounds like good business to me! What makes me sick is that Brighton haven't jumped on this band wagon yet!

I expect this lad is totally star-struck by the "glamour" of signing for Man U, and yes he'll probably make a tidy sum for himself in the bargain as well. But I hope he's not actually under the impression that he'll have a career as a professional footballer in this country, certainly not with the club he's just signed for anyway.

Hmm. My first impression was that Fergie was signing a Chinese boy for his personal pleasure or to help around the house.

I'm getting visions of Kato from the Pink Panther films now. Hiding in sock drawers and pouncing on the red-nosed twat when he's least expecting.

Hopefully the Anti-Capitalist protesters will catch on to the way Man Ure are ' globalising ' the Premiership.

A few riots outside Old Trafford should encourage fans to stay away, don't you think.

I'm surprised they haven't offered MacDonalds a large sum for the use of their ' M ' trademark. Surely ' Big Mac's ' can easily be renamed ' Big Manc's ', whilst ' Ronald MacDonald ' can be re-branded ' Ronaldo MancCharlton '.

To be fair, this is no different to Arsenal signing Junichi Inamoto. Their official site was plastered with adverts (in Japanese) advertising official shirts with his name on the back, and be honest, Wenger never intended to play him.

Only after the World Cup did Fulham give him a chance after realising that on his day he can actually play football worthy of the Premiership, even if not Champions League.

Will his agent be Don King ? If so I can just see the headlines now:

US - Chineise ' King - Dong ' merger adds to Red's Faces in the Utd Superstore.

Or how about ' King - Dong , the biggest member in Utd's dressing room '.

' King - Dong fee, what a whopper chopper ! '

Perhaps he'll be allocated the whopping big number 12.

Gunter should be well happy.

Christ, I've been meaning to do that for ages.

Pedantic I know, but I just couldn't hold it back any longer.
